As we are racing next week Speedy was kind enough to share his race build up with us sad.gif . It was never going to be a good idea to follow it, but we did it anyway. Paramedics from the Royal Gwent Hospital were on standby.

We finally decided on Fartlek training in strokes 10 @ 2k paceish (175bpm), followed by 10 @ 2:15 ish (145bpm). We did 10, 20...60...20, 10. We figured 15 mins and it would all be over, but after 7 mins (and still only about a quarter into it) I looked over at rob to see his sweat glands on triple time. 25 mins later we finished and staggered out to collapse on the lawn.

I think we failed to keep our rest pace where we had intended (it was impossible in the latter half) but we finished strong and nevertheless were 'Dwayne for a day! cool.gif '

Just for fun, a fellow erger (and forumite) from Canada and I are having a race to see who will reach the half way point between our cities first. We live about 645 km apart. Whoever gets halfway first gets a goofy T shirt from the other. It's silly but sometimes silly things work! So this should help me be a better team member!

Also I am getting Grams' old model C pretty soon--I can't wait to have a PM2 monitor and a quieter machine! She upgraded it with the D handle and nylon sprockets. So I will be able to hear something besides VROOOOOM VROOOM VROOOM (and so will my family!)

Just returned from The Golden Mile (1609m), at Evesham Rowing Club. Chris and Rob entered along with a guest appearence by Eddie English.

PB's were set by all 3 rowers:
Chris 5:24.4 (previously 5:35)
Rob 5:40.0 (previously 5:45)
Whilst Eddie took the bronze medal in the 60-69Hwt @ 6:35.9 (previously unrowed)

This is the 3rd competetion that the TA has entered and the 3rd time we've come home with silverwear! Great effort Ed!

Really, really, really hurt, but LOVED THE PAIN!!!
Great event thanks to all the organisers.

Have been meaning to post but needed something good - here it is:

Tonight, in a sleepy Welsh town, two Taffs (Chris and Rob) with a desire for pain held a Regatta. It was called The Risca Regatta of Regret.

We decided to use the handicapping system on the UK site. As we discussed it I could see Rob's apprehension. He didnt think his predicted time of 7:08 was enough to beat my prediction of 6:55. I ran it through the handicap (when he wasn't there!) and was suprised at the result, it put us only a second apart. Game On!

Rob wanted to go first (he couldn't face watching me knowing he had to go through it too). We set the pace boat at 1:47, which he manged to stick to the entire time, and beat it through the tape to finish in 7:07 dead (and he was judging by the way he swore up the street after it!). Great effort taking 11 seconds off his previous best!

I was not happy, I ran his time throught the site and got an adjusted time of 7:09.6. I worked backwards to find my time and was dismayed to find it at 6:53.8 ohmy.gif

We set the pace boat at 1:43.5 and off I went. I had a great start but knew I could never hold it. Then I had to sit there for 1200 meters, and watch him eat up my lead, and then actually pass me. In the last 500 meters I asked for more and was suprised to find it (pace boat makes a huge difference!). I got the pace down to 1:42's and clawed back to finish 0.8 seconds in front.

Great, great experience soon to be repeated. Any suggestions of how to improve the set up, or other entrants will be most welcome.

Chris and Rob
Not quite loving the pain as much as we'd hoped!

Chris and Rob,
You guys ROCK!!! What a great race. What a great story.

Rob - 11 seconds!!!!! Holy crap!!! If we could all have pb's like that. What you need is to have that little pace boat with you at every event.

Chris - Was that a pb for you too?

What sort of pain is instore for you two next??

Chippy,
Way to go!!!!! 11 secs off a pb is incredible. Same with 5 sec. I wish I could do that.

As far as coming your way. I'll be trying to get the free ride to Amsterdam this year with USIRT. That's about as close to Wales as I'll make it this year. But the future Mrs. is wanting to go back to G.B. sometime in the near future, so we could definitely drop your way.

FYI - I do all my best erging in garage type settings. Country clubs aren't all what they're hyped up to be.

You want to thank me for the help, and I appreciate that. But remember, all I did was supply you with a tool. The two of you put it to use and did all the hard work. If you want to really thank someone, look in a mirror!! Keep it up and you'll be in Beijing in '08.

Row well for that 6:57. Don't leave anything in the tank.

Glad to hear you're loving the sessions. A bit sick I must say, but hey...to each their own. If you love them so much, then here's a way to make them more interesting. Instead of just going at your normal 500m, take 5 seconds off of that. For example, if you're doing a 1:30 split....then drop it to 1:25. LOTS 'o fun!!!!!!!
