Wow, you guys really are inspiring! ...
make me feel like I'm just messing around over here!
Most of my
best rows, like last night's HM, start at around 10:30 or 11:00 pm
|
Hi Carla
I have to work very
late or very early sometimes, so I have an idea how tiring that can be. So
rowing a half marathon at 11.00pm is a little tough in my book. I'm not sure I
could do that. To tell the truth I don't think I could row a half marathon at
any time?
I think you're the inspiring one fitting in the mighty rows
between your family and your music.
You play in an orchestra, right? Now
that, to me, is cool!
. which
orchestra do you play in, if you don't mind me asking?
Daren's PBing just
for fun these days.

Hey Carole
Thanks for the encouragement, things
are doing pretty well. Improved technique (mainly, learning to tighten stomach
muscles at the catch), rowing at 10MPS, etc., made that a relatively easy
row--other efforts resulted in lots of soreness, pulled hamstrings (from using
the straps--don'tuse them any more), and thrown out lower back--got up today a
little sleepyish feeling but perfectly fine otherwise. I won't be working on
really speeding that up until I can row an HM and feel like I did
nothing.
What do you do for work? Sounds like some really long days going
on!

Thanks! It did me good. =)
After
my cold 30 mins earlier, I decided to warm up a bit for my real attempt this
afternoon.
I did 1.5k as a warm up, then hit the 30 min test. The result
was a new 30min PB of 7,617m. All of my average splits (90 second segments) were
under 2:00 pace. The last 90 seconds worked out at 1:47, so I had a strong
finish and could probably have worked harder, earlier without totally blowing
up. Finished off with a 2k cool down. That's another 11k or so in the Taffybank.

Aye, but you're 6' 2" old man! =) I'll have another go in
a couple of weeks.
"LP" in my signature stands for "Low Pull". Basically,
warm yourself up and then pull 5 or 6 very hard strokes. The "Low Pull" is the
lowest split time you can get the monitor to display. Most people put the damper
on 10 to try this. It's a macho brute strength pissing contest, really. =)

Hi Bernard,
I play violin in 2 orchestras, study
privately, and play "for fun only" in a quartet. One orchestra is a student
orchestra, I only play in the advanced chamber group and often solo with them (I
used to play with every level to help support them but it got to be a bit much)
and their website is www.mvsostrings.org ; the other orchestra is a
semi-professional community orchestra www.mvpomusic.org (I'm in the 'semi'
part), and I'm a second violin with them. The quartet is just for fun, we meet
once a week and sight read stuff, and me and the other violin switch off on the
first or second part. I probably practice 3--4 hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week,
just trying to survive.
Not bad, considering I took my instrument out of
the dusty closet 8 years ago and played my first recital (along with all the
little kids paying Twinkle Twinkle Little Star) when I was 36....
Usually
I have to take it easy on the rowing for a few days before a performance because
you don't want to be tight and sore or just fatigued, so it's kind of a juggling
act. Playing the violin is a lot more physical than people think, but it's a
different kind of physical, and one of the hardest things for me to learn was
that you can't play it like you're rowing it or pedaling, you can't beat it into
submisison, you have to release the music in it, let it out, draw it out. It's
made for an interesting balance in my life, that's for sure!
That was
probably more than you ever wanted to know about
that!

Not at all Carla
When I was a small boy, my
mum smacked me around until I agreed to learn the piano
. We had
an old badly tuned one in the sitting room. I played it for a year, even though
I preferred pop and soul to endless Bach minuets and fingering exercises.
Luckily soccer, we say football in England, saved me. When I was older I
took some grades for something to do and appreciated it a bit more, though I
still prefer Billy Joel and Stevie Wonder (my age!) to Bach and Beethoven, good
players though they are. Still preferred football to the circle of fifths and
squash became an obsession, and of course the opposite sex, but what the heck...
I think I can respect the kind of talent and dedication that goes into
learning an instrument, especially for someone who's older. It takes a lot of
bottle (Englandese for courage and confidence) to go back to school and "play
with the kiddies").
Does being a fit rower help you with your music?
I apologise
beforehand if you don't want to talk about this stuff!! It's an interesting
diversion for me and takes my mind off what I'm going to do to my body on the
rower now. It'll thank me when it's older... Where have I heard that before...?

For any Taffs who are unaware of what Rowpro 1.7 offers, its
internet racing/training for the PM3 (also supports PM2+). I will be buying, and
I know chippy wont be able to live without it for long. Hopefully some of the
rest of us who are lucky enough to have our own ergs will see this as a good

I had much the same attitude approaching my
first. At the time I had never gone more than 60:00 at a time (sore
bum), and when I determined to do a marathon "no matter what" I started by
making Sunday my "long row" day with the goal of adding 10% to my longest
every Sunday until reaching a full marathon. In reality, once I hit
2:00:00 I decided to make the leap a week later, and did so
successfully. From what I remember about marathon training for
running, the 2 hour workout gives about the optimum capillary and
mitochondria development. I think that it's worth stretching out
those half-marathons to 2 hours if at all possibe.
As to doing sub 2:50:00, when I broke through that I was also
doing just under 1:23:00 for the half-marathon, 15,425m for 60:00 and
38:15 for 10km. My pace differential between the full and half was
2.4sec/500m. I'm more of an endurance guy, so that's probably a
smaller differential than the average. Ranger's Double the D add
3sec/500m, and Paul Smith's Double the D add 5 sec/500m are probably more
realistic.
Good luck with it. It gives a nice sense of
accomplishment.
Rick |
Thanks once again Rick,
That
post is PURE GOLD ! Just what I needed and fits like a glove. You're not my
long-lost twin cousin (Robert Morris-Jones) perchance ?! I too find the
endurance events come more naturally, although I've only experienced running for
2-3 hrs to any degree.
Interesting to compare the two. On the one hand
Erging seems a bit easier if I stay in my 'comfort zone', mainly because I'm
sitting down. But as soon as I move out of the comfort zone for an extended
period it becomes noticeably harder than jogging the equivalent distance. Could
be the 'seamless' nature of the runnng action whereby one can slip into what
seems like an effortless rhythm, whereas the rowing stroke consists of a series
of VERY different parts (changing direction 180 degrees twice for one
!).
Enough rambling - thanks for the encouragement, we'll see what I'm
made of soon !
Happy erging,
Martin

What's this about this

all talking about? I will have to search the rest of the
forum.
Godfried--when did you do your marathon! Today? That is so cool. I
didn't see that here, you must have posted OTA (off Taff Attack) maybe in the PB
thread? 3:10 is awesome--that's only a few minutes slower than me doing 2 HMs at
the same pace I do one--which can't happen--wow.
Carole, now when I am
trying for a PB I'll be imagining you rowing after me in your uniform blowing a
whistle! Should result in faster times.
When I was a kid, my dad used to go
around singing this funny song that I can only remember snatches of, something
like "Bobbies on bicycles, two by two" and has a chorus "Don't put knives in
babbies' heads, down by the river Salia" or some such oddity. I can't believe I
actually know (well, sort of) an actual Bobby!
My C2 only has PM2 so I
can't do RowPro.... is it really fun? Do you have to have a computer right
there, or does it work on the rower monitor, or what?
Martin, I am afraid
to look and see how far behind I am. I thought I'd better take a day off after
the HM and if I look I will row and be sorry... We are going away this weekend,
Friday through Monday, so I won't be rowing then. But you are running this

The main problem, Martin, is that I won't have time to do
a full marathon before I break the first million. I have 67471m left to row, but
today, Thursday and Friday are work days so I can't find the 3-4 hours needed. I
plan on passing 1 million on Friday (another 21k today, 28k tomorrow leaving me

Another 10k in the Taffybank, and a new PB time for the
distance to boot.
My last 10k was done on Sept 17th in a time of 42:35.9
(2:07.8). Splits about 2:09, power output was about 165W and a 29/30 stroke
rate.
The one I just did was 40:29.5 (2:01.5) which is a new PB by about
2 minutes.
As far as the online rankings go, it's still 57% of the way
down for my age range and build. In fact, all my longer distances are well down
(60mins 63%, HM 58%). The shorter distances are in the 40-50% range mostly, so I
guess I'm just built more for shorter distances.

planned 16 x 2500m + 1 x 2195m interval at a pace of 2:12.2 with a 2 min break
after 10 , 20 , 30 k.
That plan gave me an
average pace/500m ( at
each 2500m ! ) :
2:12.2 2:12.2 2:12.2 2:12.2
10k 2:18.2 after
break
2:17.5 2:17.0 2:16.6 2:16.2
20k 2:18.2 after break
2:17.7
2:17.3 2:16.7 2:16.5
30k 2:18.2 after break
2:17.7 2:17.3 2:17.0
2:16.7
40k 2:16.5
42,195 time total 3:11:56.4
So I knew
what was going to happen , and could anticipate it.
I went faster, and
ended in 3:09:15.3 average 2:14.6/500m.

Hi Daren,
Fantastic PB. Shows
the value of the massive amount of Kms you have been doing since starting 2
months ago. Sub 40 just around the corner at this rate !
Just watch out for possibility of injuries now that you are getting the

more rest days doesn't hurt. You've earned it, doing 1 Million metres in under 2

Martin,
Thanks for filling me in. Somehow I missed
the entire end of page 35.
Also, I can't do math for beans. It's totally
amazing to me that with my complete lack of competence (I'm NOT being sarcastic)
I managed to homeschool my 3 kids through Algebra II. I taught the two boys Alg
I, which I had to learn with them because I didn't know it, and then had to
learn it all over again with my daughter 2 years later. The boys went on to
finish College Algebra & Trig and Calc I, II, III and Differential Equations
before they graduated high school. And I still can't stinking add, subtract,
multiply and divide correctly!!!

I set
out to just match my last 10k, but I felt too good for that and decided to aim
instead for 2:05. At 1K to go I was at 2:05.2 so I poured it on. It felt great
except that I messed up and thought I was done but it read 98 m to go, don't
know how I did that and had to start again. I was really proud of this
row:
I am too lazy to figure out my MPS but I'm guessing close to 11
because most of the time I was pulling each time on one number lower, if you
know what I mean.

Carla, that's fantastic. Well done!
Such a low
stroke rate, too. I find I really struggle to work at a low rate. It seems far
too tiring. I'm much more confortable bouncing along at 32 SPM or so, but I dare
say it's not a good idea for my knees.

Hi
Fantastic row Carla! Great effort Godfried!
Daren, it seems every time you sit down to row, you do a personal best.
Congratulations on your million miles. Excellent stuff!
Carla, you can't be that bad at Maths if you home taught your kids
through algebra. I'm supposed to be quite a competent mathematician - I did my
degree in Computer Science - and I found algebra very difficult when I first
learnt it, so you can't have done such a bad job with the old maths. I make
horrible mistakes with simple calculations, even
now.

Martin, you are too smooth for
words!
Did
20x30secs at 1'38" with 30 (36spm) secs between each interval last
night.
Hopefully will do 10k tonight, consisting of 5x1500 at around
1'50" (30-32spm) and a 2k warmup and a 500m warm down.

Hey Carole--
Yup, we're twins! sort of...I think I
have a height and probably a weight advantage over you. Felt great last night
when I finished it (12:45 am) but this morning I'm really sleepy and sluggish.
Can't think why. hmmm
I suppose you are now going to up the ante! It
doesn't bear thinking about right now. I feel about as ambitious as a bowl of
cold oatmeal.
Carla
PS what's "weg" and "all in one", is that
long underwear?

Hi Daren,
Once I get rowing smoothly on the longer
distances (I really stink at the short ones) I'm much more comfortable with a
long stroke than a high stroke rate. It's so relaxing, well, I mean, it's calmer
and more controlled, and just feels powerful and good. The trick will be to be
able to maintain the MPS at faster paces, which of course dictates a faster
stroke rate. It will be a while before I work my way up to that.
It's
kind of a throwback to my old style of biking, which was to almost never shift
out of 10th gear. I had this bike (still ride it, but it's fixed now) that would
seem to always shift back into 10th when I was going up hill so I got disgusted
and just left it in 10th for a few years. That got me on the crew team in the
first place--a friend of mine was a rower and after our first bike ride
together, (on which I coasted up hills behind her,) she convinced me to go out
for crew. Since then I've improved my biking technique and I'm a lot faster, but
I think the early accidental resistance training in high school sort of stuck
with me.
You are already doing super well for having just started rowing
such a short time ago. I would work on increasing the strength of each drive a
la Paul Smith's advice, and rowing strapless, if you are using the straps
now.

the best plan.

Hi
I did a 2000 metre test instead of
the training I said I was going to do. I had the shock of my life when I broke
7'10" for the first time. I'm still shaking like a leaf after the effort, my
legs are unsteady, my lungs burn and I really don't feel too clever. Am I
supposed to feel like this?
It all augurs well for BIRC, though. I think
I may have underestimated my goal for this year. Ah well, just have to improve
my goal setting for next year.
I think I'll rest tomorrow or just paddle
for a while.
I really don't know how Martin, Dwayne and others row so
fast.
Actually, I'm quite happy with what I did today. Thanks for
allowing me to share this with you. I haven't the energy to shout from the roof
tops like the rest of you wonderful people.
Try not to laugh at me, but
while I've been writing this all I've been able to say is "bloody hell... 7.10.
An old man like me." every so often.
I wonder what it would feel like to
go under 7'. Nah! A ridiculous delusion.
Have fun guys and
girls.

I'm Back!!!As planned, I did my 10,000m
row this afternoon. Did a steady pace and finished in 42:25.6. No aches or pains
(other than the normal ones!) so it went well and I'm looking forward to another
session tomorrow morning.
I've been away on business for the last three
days so it took me a long time to review all the postings I'd missed. I really
didn't realise what an active thread this was until today.
Everyone's
been really busy and achieving yet more PBs so well done to all.

Excellent stuff! Well done!
2k's always make me feel queasy. I normally collapse on the carpet for
10 minutes before I even move again.
I tried to beat my 1k time today
and died horribly half-way through. In the end I limped home 0.1s faster. =/

[Sorry Chippy, checked the Nonathlon
rankings to see how Daren went only to find I'd been elbowed aside by
LLAMATRON too Time to
play my 'Ace', a 30 min effort at the gym. Mission accomplished, 8040.
Dying badly with 11 mins to go trying to hold the pace when a gorgeous
bare midriff squirted me with her water bottle (can
I read anything into that ladies ?). Next I recall it was only 7 mins to
go and I was out of the 'danger' zone. Time for some Nonathlon 'daylight'
between us !!!!
