Must have been expensive gravel.

You need to shave your legs if you're serious about cycling. It's easier to get the tarry gravel out when it's not sticking to the hairs. Shaving your legs, also, makes you go faster (although it doesn't have that effect on the erg).

Doesn't have an engine (Unlike the other 4 I own)

Ah! I get it...I almost got a motorcycle a few years ago, Norton Comando 850. but the wife made it very clear that it was the bike or her. Since she is a divorce lawyer I figgered it was safer to forget about the bike... blink.gif blink.gif

Heheh. More importantly, it makes you look like a wannabe drag queen. There's no good reason to shave one's legs, in my opinion, unless one makes a habit of eating asphalt, or has a handy soigneur at home. If you really want that miniscule drag reduction on the bike, wear Lycra tights. Sure, you'll still look like a big old ladyboy whilst out on the road, but at least you can reverse the effect instantly once you hit the gym, squash court, swimming pool or bedroom.

OK, I admit it does look quite good on the posing stakes if one has the legs and the speed to back it up... I haven't shaved my legs since 1988. =)
Ray79
Surely from purely an aerodynamics point of view there is no reason to shave legs for cyclists. The hairs cause the airflow to be more turbulent, hence more energetic, and hence less likely to separate. The flow attaches better to the surface of the leg, reduces the thickness of the boundary layer and thus causing less drag. Most people think that hairy = more drag. Not true. For the same reason why golf balls have dimples. The healing thing is probably more likely a reason, but i think that it could be just posing!!

Swimmers have been proven to be more efficient when shaved, dont know the dynamics behind it, but the bodysuits that were designed to replicate shaving were banned by FINA

Ok after watching the Taff Attack forum for a few weeks and looking at the CTC site today, I've got to say I'm impressed. Both with the banter and with your abilities. I tried a 300m row this evening and hit 1:02.0 and almost burst my lungs, How Dwayne gets below 45 seconds is beyond me. The only good thing about times over 1 minute is that I still get the metres added to my logcard smile.gif

What is the secret of a racing start? I haven't got it for sure

Anyway after buttering you all up for a paragraph or two I'd like to join the Taffs if I might. My times are all pretty poor ranging from 64% to 80% in the rankings, but I am persistent, I was at least on the same first page as Dwayne (but a million meteres behind) in the January virtual challenge with about 470K for Team Oz.

Also I'm a born and bred taff 18 years in Llandrindod Wells, before leaving. I'm now in Brisbane, Australia (and 26 years older) so you'll have a couple of us working your night shift.

Brendin,
With a resume like that, you're as good as in. Welcome to TA.

The racing start: If this is for the 300m CTC, then you should do one thing to the erg before you get started. Turn it so that the fan end is toward a wall (or something else solid). That way it won't bounce across the floor when you do this piece.

Ok...half, half, three-quarter, three-quarter, full. That's a typical racing start. And since this is only (yeah right, only) three hundred meters, you go b*lls out the whole way. How's that?

Here's a, "How could I have been this stupid?" moment:

Took a day off yesterday, psyched to do another 300M today. Warmed up, took the erg off the slides, weighed myself and was 164.2 ... a LW again. Bested my old time and got a PB. Then realized that I HAD LEFT THE DRAG AT 115!!!

Rats!!!

Now gotta get psyched to do another, sometime soon, at high drag.

Two Questions:
1. Do you look the part?, coz if you speak to Chippy, then according to him thats all that matters.
2. Do you realise that Llandrindod is now the start of the biggest enduro in Wales (The Welsh Enduro). People come from all over (I had an American on my minute last time I did it, and theres Europeons everywhere!), to ride 300 miles of Welsh forestry. See here http://www.welsh2dayenduro.com/

My first attempt last week in my freezing cold garage.Did a step test first with Chris to find our AT levels which was a killer, then just as i was putting it all away decides to do a 300m,Chris stood on the front of the machine, computer cables
under the front floor brace so it was of the floor, black plastic bag had slipped under the back floor brace which acted like an oil spill. Chris was thrown around like a rag doll as i blasted it out. When i got my breath we could not stop laughing
when we noticed the bag and the cables. biggrin.gif

Welcome Brendin.

I had a day off so I went to the gym with Debs. (It was supposed to be a unofficial 25min race - 6250m for me, 5K for Debs. She started before me, then had to stop for three mins for a phone call.) I wore my TAFF AIO. That turned a few heads with the old codgers in the gym.

The racing start is pull furiously for the first six to eight strokes, then ease back to the pace you've planned to row at. If you go too far the lactate will build in your legs and you're on for a fly'n'die race.

I got two strokes out of the first eight in at new low pull of 1:26 last time I tried the crazy 300m (on damper 10). I'm going to drop it back to damper 8 next time.

I actually couldn't keep a straight face from pretty much half way - It was as if Chippy was TRYING to move the rower up the garage. It was banging like h*** into my knee, and I knew all the time Chippy was getting annoyed because I wasn't holding it properly - the more I tried to hold the laffing back the harder it got to hold on, then I just thought - ah *uck him!

Oh, fine, enough already!!!
I'm still not rowing at full slide because of the knee/tendon whatever the h*** it is that is bothering my left leg. Did 4K warm up, pokey pokey and gave the 300 a feeble shot. Of all absurd workouts this has got to be the silliest I have ever attempted. The last 100 meters was quite dreadful and I'm sure the video would be a hoot. Anyway, managed 56.2 at a ridiculous average spm of 51. Drag was 135, (usually I row at 117.) We're in 3rd for a minute or two.

It looks like Mark Pukita, Godfried and I are all really in the same boat!!

Hi Brendin,

Welcome to the team, nice to have a fellow team member closer that 10,000 miles away for a change ! I have relatives living in Bundaberg so get to pass through Brissy quite often on the way to/from, maybe we can catch up sometime ? And if you visit Melbourne it would be great to have a row together. My email address is in the Taff team profile.

Great 300m Carla. WOW ! I did a 500m (reluctantly) last week at the insistence of one of my gym crowd who is super competitive (ex sprinter) and is close to doing me over 500m. I did a PB of 1:35.4 to just see him off (1:36.8) and noticed I went through the 300m in 1:35 ave pace - 57 secs. So your time was tops in my book !

Great story Chippy/Chris laugh.gif laugh.gif

Hi Martin, I see you down there!
Great 500 m pb, bet it wasn't at 51 spm, 200 more meters would have given me whiplash

Hi Carla, sorry I missed your post, I must have wandered off to another part of the forum (probably to see what Ranger was up to).

No, it wasn't at 51 SPM but don't think I can improve much anyway - I'm a bit of an old stick-in-the-mud rowing purist when it comes to erging and can't seem to break my old rowing habits. Also the local gym is a bit too public for Extreme Erging blink.gif So unavoidable short pieces are usually done at high 30's SPM on DFs around 105 - though on this last one I snuck the DF up to 115 to make sure I had the best chance of seeing Robert (the competitive guy) off and still finish with my matching inguinal hernia ops still intact laugh.gif

Actually would love to be still able to cut loose like Chippy and the others (you included) but that's a previous life !

Hope you kick goals in your next attempt - oh yes, there will be another I'm sure !

Great Stuff Carla, Dwayne and Team

All Very impressive times.

I managed to get to the gym for the first time in 5 weeks. I'm not sure I should have been there but I figured that since I was seeing the Physio straight afterwards if I did anything wrong she could fix it.
Actually I didn't dare tell her what I had done because she told me what I would be doing in two weeks time. It was all the stuff I had just done tongue.gif

Anyway couldn't resist the erg and did 2.5K Arms only.

I will be adding my 1.09.1 for 300M on the CTC site as it will help fill another boat, Somebody has to come last I guess. However it was pointed out to me that since this was arms only and therefore only using half my body, wouldn't it be fair to half the time. Giving me a time of 34.9Sec and putting me top of the board.

So far as full recovery is going, it appears to be very slow, I have full flex in the knee but because of the fractured bone can't put any weight on my leg for another 10 days, then partial weight for a month after that. Whilst partial weight bearing I should be able to get into the pool and run which means I can try and build my CV back up.
Most of the pain has gone but the knee has swollen again so need to work on getting that down before doing too much again. Looks like I will be restricted on what I do by the extent of the swelling.

So I will spend the weekend lying down watching the Rugby. Has anyone got Tickets?

Be careful, Phil!
If you don't watch out you'll have arms like Popeye from rowing arms only that way!

Phil:

Please take care not to reinjure or further injure yourself ... that would not be good.

Ok...half, half, three-quarter, three-quarter, full. That's a typical racing start. And since this is only (yeah right, only) three hundred meters, you go b*lls out the whole way. How's that?

Wow - tried this - first time ever and went from 1:02.0 down to :57.2

put the damper up to 6 from 3.5 - maybe I'll try 10 next time

And Quietly, with no fanfare Paul Tulk (Tulky) adds his metres to the Taffs -930,000+ of them

A big welcome to Paul

2 new members in two days and 1.5M metres - keep this up and we might top this thing yet :-)

Just logged on to check it was all still there after the system crash yesterday - it took me a fews hours to type it in from my good old fashioned diary the night before.

Is it just me or is the system much faster now?

Have you seen the rugby training guide on the UK site Phil?

All the images are of the Welsh side from last year's 6 nationa and the previous autumn internationals.

I guess because either

a. Wales are the 6N champions (still)
b. The images are cheaper than the English ones
c. someone who put the guide together is a Taff?

here it is if you haven't seen it - great images http://www.concept2.co.uk/training/rugby.php

Felt guilty about having a day off then took 1 sec off 300m (55.7) and went under 8 mins for 2k for first time. Cheered me up no end!
Cheers, Paul

Great stuff. Always feels great to get a PB (or two). Not that I've been anywhere near mine for more than a year. /o\
