Hopefully I should now be showing on the team members
page for Taff Attack (thanks for the prompt Chris).
Having only just managed
to complete a 5K row this week (and I remember times when I was doing up to
3x10K a day!!) I'm going to up the distance tomorrow and go for a 7K row. Wont
be looking to beat any PBs just want to ocncentrate on increasing my metres per
session.
I'll let you know how I get on.
My aim is to be able to
start my challenge at the beginning of September and I've already contacted the
Communications department in my company to raise the profile (for sponsorship).
They've agreed to match any funds raised so that's great news.
I'll keep
you posted on my progress.
Cheers,
Niall

Seems you've started something of a trend.
Looks as though the Scot's are getting into the National Hertiage spirit as well

Since you're such a trend setter, maybe you should be

Well as promised I completed my 7000m this afternoon. I
must admit it wasn't as tough as I thought it was (after the 5K on Tuesday) but
it was still hard work all the same. My time of 29:45.6 doesn't matter as I just
wanted to make sure I could do the distance (my PB for 5K is 18:55.4).
I
plan to do another 7K on the weekend and then next week it'll be a case of doing
7K on consecutive days and if I feel okay, towards the end of the week I'll
throw in a 10K session.

Greetings taffers, I haven't posted in a while, so
thought I'd say hello.
I've been pole-axed by a summer flu bug for the
first two weeks of August, hence nil metres, but the coughing and spluttering
finally subsided enough for me to get back on the erg this weekend. I have a
week in which I can throw in the metres before I'm off to the less fair land for
a week's hols. The aim is to get in 8 lots of 25k by Saturday, which should
bring my monthly metres back up to respectable and more importantly, put me past
the million mark for TA in the year to date.
Chippy, watch the curse of
the Max HR a bit mate! My worst moment on the bike was along those lines a few
years back. I had a measured max HR of 207 at the time which was high for my
age. I threw all of my effort into a monster climb and looked down at the
monitor to see it flashing 213. Shortly afterwards came chest pains and the
inevitable collapse. I didn't do any damage, but it was definitely an "oh sh*t
moment". After that, I've always been a bit wary of prolonged
red-lining.
Row on folks, we're getting closer to 6th place
slowly.
Welcome to the TA Niall.

Hi all you Taffy Taffs
Just checked the University standings, and I see you are still up near
the top No.7, but what are you going to do about Team Oarsome, they are sitting
at number 3. I see they have 8 more members then you, but you do have speedy who
clocks nearly 200k a day
Oh, and Sir Lord Earl Adams, I am very
dissapointed with the U.S.A Dream Team in the Olympics, I know it is a "junior
Team" but these guys are all young and soon to be mega star players, yet it
looks like they could not hit a cows arse with a bango at the moment, let alone
score a 3 pointer. Beat Greece though (just) hope they sort it out

Only 177,426 to catch University of New Mexico! That's
only 28,183 for each of us!
I did just 5K today, 2 legged but kind of
going gentle on the left. Ridiculously enough it ended up being a season's best
by 18 seconds (908 points on Nonathlon). I don't really know how it compares to
my actual PB because that was 2 seasons ago, but the Nonathlon score for my best
time was 922. Considering that I didn't even do any warmup and was pretty sure I
was going to end up one legged before it ended, I was pretty
psyched!

Oh yeah - I wanted to anounce the date of
the 'The Risca Regatta of Revenge'. The finale will be held on Tuesday 31st
August. I want as many people as possible to submit times, age, and weight from
now until Tuesday night (RMT - Risca Mean Time). Remember ladies are also
welcome as we will interpolate your position to the mens raking and use the
corresponding male time.
I dont see any rules other than anyone with a
double 'ee' in their name automatically carries a 60 second time penalty - sorry
but its in the rules! I think this rule will only effect Speedy anyway, so most
people need not worry about it.

The Regatta of Revenge is on, and the current scores
based on CII handicaps are:
1st Chris at 7:05.9 (Actual 6:49.5)
2nd
Rob at 7:08.6 (Actual 7:08.2)
3rd Speedy at 7:08.7 (Actual 6:02.1 plus 60
secs for the 'ee' in his name)
I know there are other entries on the way,
but we would like this to be a team event with everyone participating. The
handicapping throws up some suprises so give it a shot.

Phil,
More info on those 2k's that I do.
1st
2k - damper setting as low as possible (on my erg normally around 102). SR of 24
26 28 (1st 700m at 24, next 700m at 26 and last 600m at 28).
2nd 2k -
damper setting at 110. Same SR.
3rd 2k - damper setting at 120. Same
SR.
I use the lower damer settings to force me to be quick on my leg
drive. The lower SR is for power developement.
I'm not trying to break
any records when I do these, I just try to improve on my times from the week
before.

Sir Pirate |
Like I mentioned, the change in the df
is to force me to be quick out of the catch. Especially the 1st 2k, and with the
lower SR.
By the time I hit my last 2k (df around 120), my drive is
quick enough that the higher df is actually a bonus. My split times are lower
with what seems like the same amount of effort. Hope that answers your
question.

I will try that session. I don't think I will have much
joy with it though, as I have rowed a 125Df setting for over a year and can not
adjust to anything else.
Can't row higher setting, will try 110df, 118Df
then 125Df. If I don't go sub 6:15 on the last one me and you will be having

Phil,
You're going to have some
issues with this initially. But if you stick with this for a while (do it every
friday for like two months), you should notice a difference.
I would
also recommend that you drop the df all the way down, then do a 110, and then
your normal 125. You won't have any choice but to be quicker at the catch. When
you finally get back up to your normal df, you keep that quickness. That
will drop your split times.
Dwayne
Interesting session Dwayne, what about intensity? With 15
minutes rest are they basically as hard as you can make em?
On the lower
df needs more quicker catch/more explosive drive issue I agree. On the df I've
been using since i started i've progressively found it harder to rate high when
I have been doing lots of low rate work. Yesterday I did a HM p.b and dropped
the df down to 125 from 135 which helped a lot, and I managed to rate 28 instead
of my usual 26/27

Having pulled in the metres as part of my Million Metre
Challenge, I was fast approaching Martin's total and expected to move up to 9th
position in the Taff Attack standings. As it is Martin's put in a session to
overtake Carla and push him further away from me and into 8th place.
The
challenge now is whether I've got the energy after this morning's row to put in
a 10K this afternoon to overtake Carla.
So
the competition for position 8 in the Team Standings is being hotly contested
and this can only be a good thing as it will increase the metres for the team as
a whole (we've still got our eye on the University of New Mexico!).
Good
luck everyone!!
Niall
Sep 3 2004, 05:40 PM
Well, focused on that 8th position, I decided to do an
11,000m session to leapfrog Carla and Martin (for now anyway).
It
was a hard row as I'm not used to that sort of distance (especially as a second
row in the day) but the sense of relief and achievement at the end of it made it
worth it.
I think Ricky's 7th position is very safe as that 137,000m gap
is too much to contemplate.
So I'm
happy to battle it out with Carla and Martin to the benefit of Taff Attack's
overall metres.
Keep rowing guys...

Best

We were camping in Acadia National Park for a week, biking a bit,
about 100 miles or so on gravel roads. The terrain there is fairly hilly. Lots
of hills at 1 mile+, some 2 miles+ long. It was great. No hiking for me,
Achilles still bothering a bit. Biking was OK but not record breaking--I can
