What resolution do you use? I've used Flash for the logo, so it's easy to scale up and down. I could do you a nice large version, with your preferred background colour.

Taffs,
As of this morning (0640 Phoenix time), we are 641,004m behind MIT. We're gettin' there!!!

Hahah, look out, MIT! The dragons are coming. The dragons are coming!

I was scheduled to do an hour long Internet piece, but there were problems so instead I decided to have a go at 1k. 1k warmup, 5 minutes rest and the hammer time.

Previous PB 3:22.2, new time

3:19.1

3.1 seconds off. Maybe it was the little warm-up, and the 6k I did this morning.

Cool logo, Daren. Daren is the pb king. Sub 3.20 is phenomenal.

Pardon my ignorance, Daren but what is DPS and acronym for.

Bernard

Daren C
DPS in this case is "distance per stroke" in metres. I include it because my log parsing script gives me the information so it's no effort to work out, and I've heard people proffering 10m per stroke as some sort of benchmark to aim for. (Although I have also read the arguments between PaulS and others on this forum regarding that same benchmark).
Niall
Yet another great PB Daren well done. Interesting to see the comment in the UK Forum that a sub 3:20 1K is a strong indicator for a sub 7:00 2K (bet it makes you wonder!).

What was your DF for the 1K?
Daren C
Drag factor was the same as ever - around 120. Might not be exactly 120 as I put the lever on max for a 500m effort yesterday (DF 213), and just guessed when I put it back at my normal drag.
Niall

Great work Daren!

I think you should have a special avatar to use on your (frequent!) PB days. Make one with a little yellow jersey on Taff! Of course you would have to switch to the plain one on nonPB days.

I think the logo is really great--let's get on with the shirts!!!!

Carla

Daren C
Niall:

The DF of 213 is the only way I can get the "really low" splits. I find it really hard to get down to around 1:35 with my usual 120 drag, but with a high drag I can power it to 1:2x. Of course, I run out of steam before the full 500m is up, but it's still faster than trying to whizz away at a stroke rate of 40+ on a lower drag. =)

Carla:

I believe Bore Da! has something in mind as far as team apparel goes, and I don't want to tread on any toes. I'm not sure if he intends to use this logo or not, but I'll ask him about it.

Too short notice to get anything sorted for BIRC though, I should think.

QUOTE (Daren C @ Nov 11 2004, 08:01 AM)

So, now I reckon he needs a name.  Maybe "Taff" is the obvious choice, since Llewellyn has already been used.  Hell, we could even write a song.  All together now...

#Taff the mighty dragon, lived by the sea
#But rowed indoors, and all because
#He liked to watch TV

Great stuff Daren biggrin.gif A group called the 'The Seekers' made that song a huge hit over here (and elsewhere ?) in the late 60's (?) - I loved it then and your rendition brings back fond memories of that 'folk song' era. Here is another verse :-

# Taff the mighty Dragon, erging merr-i-lee
# Stri-i-ving to do his (her) best and set a new PB
# Alo-o-ong come some Oreful chaps from another team
# Try-y-ing to steal his (her) erg a-and flee the scene !

Other suitable verses can be added by our creative Taffers along the lines of 'scorching them with fiery breath' etc laugh.gif Carla can lead the Taff choir.

As for your 1K PB - fantastic. My 1K time is virtually the same as yours yet my 2K is 6:55 so that sub 7 has to fall VERY soon - once you row it so that there is something left in the tank for the last 500m !!! Great rowing Daren.

And great PB too Graham. 2:01 pace for a 5K must be a HUGE improvement on when you first started ? And that psychological barrier of holding sub 2:00 pace is soon to be broken it seems.

Niall - I like the sound of your 'last row Thursday then rest for BIRC' strategy - you want to be jumping out of your skin and raring to go at BIRC with NO leg soreness in my opinion ! Looking forward to your next post - remember not every 2K 'race' piece over the next week has to be a PB, just try to 'groove' your race plan. And maybe cut down on the 10k'ers a bit, focus is 2K !!!!!

Off to the gym now to draw that white line a bit further along

Hi all

Completed last night's routine of 4x1000 followed by 8x500 all at the same race pace and slightly lower than race pace spm. However, I have a concern.

I felt a bit catarrhy, i.e. ears felt a bit blocked, after my virus and I was hitting heart rate values I haven't seen for a while for these pieces. For the last two 1000 metres work period I was touching 190 bpm and my 500m was around 177 bpm. Throughout my six month training programme I have not been able to hit 180 max without collapsing in a heap.

This morning I rowed a 5000m with intermittent sprints to wake up and will do an hour long row this evening to recover from previous exertions. That means heart rate no greater than 150 bpm.

Martin, Dwayne, or anyone else for that matter, do I have a cause for concern here or am I just running scared before BIRC?

Bernard
AussieTaff
Hi Bernie - tough workout considering you are still recovering from a heavy cold/flu. I suspect the poor old heart is trying to cope with both the tail end of recovery from flu and the workout - hence higher than usual rate ? The fact that you completed such a gruelling session (I haven't even come close to doing one as tough as that in my visits to the gym - wimp out after a couple of 500m usually !) and are still alive to tell the tale is encouraging, and I wouldn't be too worried if it was me (although I don't have a heart monitor so am blissfully unaware of what's going on inside).

I would suggest a couple of real easy days at low DF (120) though to let the virus run its course, then perhaps a 2K 'tester' to see how things are. Still leaves plenty of time to fine tune and after 700k+ in 6 months you don't really need any more endurance work anyway - just a few 2K'ers to peak nicely for BIRC.

Martin smile.gif

PS I had a bit of a cold a week ago that left me with blocked ears for a few days. Erging probably wasn't the best for them but they have virtually cleared up now despite the 'mistreatment'. I was only doing long pieces at 2:00 pace though - no flat out stuff.

Hi Martin

Yeah, I think you're right. I'm not dead so I can still train! Normally I have a resting heart rate of around 46 - first thing in the morning - and it has been a bit higher recently around 55, but I put that down to making the final herculean efforts before tapering, but maybe my body has been telling me to give it a chance to deal with the 'lergy'. I guess a lot of work goes into preparing for something like BIRC and the thought of 'wasting' any of it makes me want to vomit.

I traditionally use a drag factor of between 130 and 140. I do most of my power work at the highest drag, so if I was doing, say, 12x250 metre repeats I would have the damper at it's highest possible setting. I often do 4x500 at damper setting 10 or 200+ drag factor.

I find for the vast majority of work and testing drag factor 140 is a maximum. Next year I want to concentrate on pulling at around 120. I'll be doing the Australian Surf boat training plan for 2k tuning and I want to be able to do all of it using a drag factor of 120.

Bernard
AussieTaff
Hi Bernie (I almost went off to bed but saw you had posted),

From memory a resting HR 10 BPM higher than normal means body fighting something so there you have it. You CAN ease off a bit, you are fit enough to taper and will be raring to go at BIRC (feeling guilt ridden at loafing if for no other reason laugh.gif ). NO high DFs when recovering from flu or injuries !

Speedy recovery,

Good going, Bernard, to do such a tough workout when you are only just recovered. When you say "race pace" do you mean at your 2K race pace, or at the 1K and 500 race (or PB) pace? Makes me tired just to think of it.

Hi Carla

When I mention race pace I am referring to my 2k race pace, which for me is about 1'48"-1'50"/500m at the moment. Hopefully I can bring that down a little this time next year.

I don't think it's that tough, if the truth is told, I find the longer rows at a challenging pace - say going for a pb - tough. I'm looking forward to doing a few of those longer pb rows after BIRC.

Heartrate was high.

The first months erging I could not get it over 170 bpm without feeling uncomfortable ( scared ? ).
The last months it has gone to 180 bpm and it feels better than the 170 bpm of the past.

Today I slowed down a little at about 179 bpm to get the whole body used to it. At 1800m it went to 182 bpm - still feeling in control.

In another post I saw GeorgeD doing a MHR test ( in my opinion not conforming to protocol - but that is beside the point here ) but I am still too afraid to do one. After 25 years doing almost nothing I think I should only do one in a medically controlled environment - maybe one day an expensive sports-medical test will be done.

Awesome, Godfried! 14 second improvement--when was your old PB set? What do you mean by it's your lowest Nonathlon, +26?

Mike--I feel for you--there is nothing quite as painful as listening to someone trying to learn to play the violin (just ask my family)--there are so many spots on the finger board that simply aren't notes at all! I hope you have the recordings that are available and that he listens to them frequently, that will help him a great deal.

Hey Ray,

Great to see your meters climbing. What are your goals for this season? Let us know--it's so much more fun when you have the team behind you!

I see from your profile that you are an archer. My son did a really cool thing last year in archery. We were camping near a large sand pit, and that's where we do archery because it's a safe spot. Well, he went off in the woods (about 1/4 mile maybe) where he couldn't see the sand pit through the trees, and then used his calculator and actually managed to come within a foot or so of a big X he had drawn in the sand. I was pretty impressed. I think he had to do something with the angle of the shot and the distance and I don't know what else. It was neat to stand (safely on the rim of the sand pit where he couldn't possibly hit us) and watch the arrow come in from nowhere and just about strike the target.

Hope to see you on the forum soon.
Carla
