In behavioral psychology this type of behavior is called
"negative reinforcement." They say the way to "extinguish" the behavior is to
ignore it. Others have suggested this, it's worth a try!

Ok, Taffs!
Let's just all do "ignore user" here. I
don't think we should allow this to destroy our teamwork. How about
it?
I gave the 6K another shot but it was no good. I blew out at 1K
to go, just couldn't keep going at that pace. The mistake I made was to get
intrigued by the pace boat function on my new PM3. I set it for 1:58.0, just .3
faster than my last one. The problem was, the pace boat toots along at exactly
the average you set, so it destroyed my plan of trying to negative split it. I
couldn't stand letting the boat get ahead at the beginning. Last time I had been
at 1:59.4, just creeping down as I got closer to the end, and did a big kick in
the last 500 to bring it down to 1:58.3, but this time I was trying to maintain
that pace and it was too fast too early. Theoretically it's supposed to be
easier on you to just hold a pace but it sure didn't feel like it. Maybe
psychological but right when I should have been hanging on and then sprinting I
just couldn't make myself hurt that bad and ended up paddling in.
As soon
as I've posted this I'm going to go check out the "ignore user" function for the
first time--I hope everyone else opts for this, too, so we can carry on without
all this assinine, crude, time wasting blather.

I just had a go at the 6k, too,
Carla. One of the great points of RowPro is that it allows one to row against a
previous row of your own, or to download other people's rows and row against
them. For my row today, I set it up to row against my previous row from 2 weeks
or so ago. The advantage of this is that it doesn't shoot off at an average
pace, but rows along with varying pace, shadowing how one rowed in that piece.
All I had to do was keep my nose ahead.
Worked a treat, and I knocked off
another 29 seconds or so. I'll tell you what, though. I'm glad it's the last one
I "have" to do for a while. =)

Going to have the wife cox me through my run on Saturday. It
worked pretty well with the last 1k on my last run, so maybe her coxing me the

Well done Chris me old matey on the 22.14 6K. Must have
been a tough one yet pleasing to do so well. You are right, I haven't got a
better 6K in me (stunned to see that one actually as I started out with the
intention of sub 22 mins only) so the Taff II boat will have to be accelerated
along by the others.
Great row Carla to go sub 2:00 pace for 6K the other
week - the first time ?
Cheers all from hot (35C+), humid Qld. Have a
tiptop New Year all.

Hey, great to
hear from you, Scott! I hope you give that 6K a go as by now you've heard from
everyone what "unlimited" is--the challenge ends 12/31 so there's not much time!
Do you think you can land in the Taff I boat?
Speedy, I'll try
again...this time, without the pesky pace boat to distract me. I think the pace
boat would have been helpful if I could have had it to do "re-row", but that
workout wasn't on PM3, so no chance to do that. It would be helpful to have a
cox again, too. It helped to have my sister there for the last 1K or so, even
though she didn't even know when to yell. My family is going to be away skiing
so I don't know if I can find anyone around but it surely would help. It sounds
like you are planning on another shot yourself, good for you.
Martin, you
are in the middle of hot summer I guess and I don't imagine it's very conducive
to racing! Yes it was the first sub 2:00 6K (3rd try at the challenge,
though).
Off to check the CTC site and see how many seconds we're off
3rd. Krysta Coleman is planning another shot with some new stroke rate strategy
so I really have to try again!

Hey Doug,
So that will be 12.5 meters per
stroke.
Last year we had a Taff Challenge for the 30 min at 20 spm. The
goal was to try to hit your PB. Speedy actually did it after I think 4 tries. It
was amazing. I went for it a mess of times and came within 85 meters. I don't
remember if anyone else tried it or not--Godfried, do you still have the stats
somewhere? 7251 is 12.09 mps. and I didn't try again after that, it was a
killer.
Should be interesting to see who ends up in Taff 1 for this one!

Carla, you really are the Wonder Woman of the Taff Attack
team. That 6K time is staggering especially when compared with your 2K PB pace.
Mindblowing!!
I wish I was able to report a similar sort of success over
the 6K distance. Was not looking forward to it as my performances of late have
been very poor and I've had sniffles and sore throat for the last
week.
Just got home after my attempt and I have to hang my head in shame
. My target
was 1:53 pace. I started well and kept pretty well to the target pace up until
about 5mins in then I started to feel seriously tired and lethargic. Slowed the
pace down to 2:00 but just felt weaker and weaker. Got to 10mins and I stopped.
Had a bit of a think and kept telling myself "the team need another time to
complete an extra boat". So after 40 secs or so, I restarted at a very
conservative pace of 2:04-2:07
.
Rallied for the final 500m just for my own good but obviously the
damage had been done by then. Crossed the line in a very embarrassing 24:30.1.

Whoops, Mark. That's no way to end the
year. Start working on your resolution right away. Courage, resistance, and
persistance - these are necessary to overcome addition.
I noticed that
too, Bob.
Apparently this is going to be quite a long journey.

Someone please log this in for me (I don't have a
password). Thanks.
Speedy, you
are The Man!!! I have to go look at the CTC and see how we stand. Hey, what was
your first shot at this? I can't remember and wanted to know how much
improvement you got over the month.
Does Mrs. Speedy count for you all
the way? Or just be there? I had Dave count for me at the end, but I have to
teach him what I want, which is to start each 100m with 1 and count till the
next 100 and start over again, not count to 10 and start over if the next 100
meters hasn't started. If you know what I mean. It was helpful he was there but
next time I'll tell him better what would help the most.

Also, don't be scared to invite non-Taffs,
this isn't related to your official team affiliation. You can be in Team Oarsome

Not any more, we ain't. Down
to 4th place now. That said, we're only 2254m behind 2nd place, so I might go
and rattle that off now, to add to my 25km so far today. It's all metres for the
team, innit? Anyone rowed today but not updated their online logbook
yet?

I did another 5km just now, but it seems it was futile
because in the intervening 25 minutes or so, other people must have updated
their distances. We're still in 4th place on total distance. Still, we're in 1st
on average distance (20237m). \o/

I see Byron Drachman is rowing for "TCBA periplaneta
americana" in this challenge. What's that, Byron?
