I'm really
pleased because it's a huge chunk off, and my first sub-40, but at the
same time I'm a little disappointed because for some of the row I reckoned
sub-39 was on the cards. Damn, damn, damn! A mere 4 seconds. That's what,
a couple of extra hard strokes in the early part of the row. I'm such a
slacker!
I aim to tackle this again and get under 39 minutes soon.
Oh yes. Watch this space |
Well, you don't have to watch it
any longer. If at first you don't succeed, grit your teeth and try
again.
Today I rowed a RowPro Internet session. The piece was set for
10k, and after 1000m I felt OK, and it looked like a sub-39 could be on the
cards if I worked at it.
Result, a new 10K PB, knocking 29.5 seconds off

Awesome improvement,
Daren!!
RowPro sounds like so much fun. One of these days I'll have to
upgrade to PM3 so I can use that. It must help to keep going on those 'why am I
doing this, anyway?' days.
From your nifty pace/point charts I see my
30 min is overdue for an upgrade! Pace for 10K is 2:05 and it's faster than the
30 min piece. I might not have really noticed that without the chart, thanks for
the tool. I'll tackle that tomorrow, I think.

Aye, I reckon it's a bit of a cheat.
=)
I'm happy to say that all my Nonathlon times are legitimate,
self-contained pieces. Huzzah! Besides, one would normally find that a real
attempt at a shorter distance will yield a faster time than just happening to
pass it during a longer row. That's assuming most people pace themselves like me
- conservatively and getting faster, rather than all-out and hang on in there.
Of course, I could always extrapolate my 30 minute distance by doubling
it, to give me a 60 minute distance of 15820.

I really don't know how you sustain such a high SPM for a whole 10K. I'm pleased

Don't you feel hurried at such a rate? I can see I've got oodles to learn on

Once
again, keep up the great work and you'll see those times tumble still further.

On the contrary, I find 28 SPM "too
slow". It feels unnatural to me. I think my natural cadence is about 31/32 SPM.
It might be because of my technique (I think I bounce off my heels), but it
feels right. Puffing starts at more like 34-36 I find.
I've tried some
of the very low rate stuff that I've seen recommended for stroke power training,
22 SPM, but I just can't do it. I always speed up.

The

I was thinking what I would race in at BIRC, you see. The
obvious choice was a Taff Attack T-shirt or vest, but there isn't one. =) At the

Hey Debra, good to see you on here! What are you doing
these days in your training? I'm mostly just doing long stuff, most days what I
call "mixed junk" totalling 10--15K, once in a while seriously doing something.
Are you still doing Wolverine? I still don't see how people get their stroke
rate properly synchronized on the specified rates, I would really need a
metrenome to do it. I saw recently that Ranger does it with a metrenome, but I
own 3 of the things and none of them go anywhere near slow enough--slowest is 35
beats per minute and that's not slow for rowing.
Well if those mean guys
ahead of you won't wait up, you could wait about 6 months for me to catch up to
you and then we could compete
Not

Hi again,
Well I guess I'm 'trapped' into the
nonathlon stats for Taff Attack. Looks like I have the highest graph! Is that
winner by being the loser?!
Carla, last week was my first time back in
several weeks so I just did very short, slow rows. I was still coughing a lot.
This week was better and I managed a few longer, more challenging rows. I did
one 2x5k and another similar to the 15x3minutes but done as 800m on at about
2:08 pace and then 200m off at about 2:20. It's a good one. The other rows were
'just row' ones without anything in particular in mind but to get the meters
done. I'm not going to try much under 2:05 for a while. I need to build up my
endurance again. That illness really knocked my socks off. I'm hoping to be
feeling good again by Christmas. I have to take a few weeks off in November for
placement but I'm hoping to still get some rows in on the weekends or night-time
so I don't lose too much. No PB attempts for me for a while. I don't want, or
need to get injured!
My good friend Christine injured her back very badly
from rowing and now has to give up the sport. She's selling her rowing machine.
It's a model C - just bought it last year.
Hey Chris and Robert - SLOW

You're ALWAYS a winner when you are
with "Taff Attack" Debra
Now's your chance to catch those two scallywags -
they are giving their all at the moment at the Southampton GP competition and so
should be too stuffed to do much next week ! Go for it (if health permits - that
must have been/be ? a pretty severe illness, not just a flu, to need such a long
recuperation period). Also I reckon they will be like those cyclists in a sprint
race who crawl around the veladrome watching each other like a hawk for a sneaky
burst !! They will probably spin it out and creep up to that 650m mark just for
dramatic effect (being Welsh Valley boyos). So now's your chance to slip past
!
Nice hearing from you - don't forget to celebrate any PB (or thrilling
row) on this thread like the rest of us !!!

PS
Wish Canada and Aussieland were a bit closer - I would be a candidate to buy
Christine's erg (though circumstances for sale sound rather sad - did she injure
herself rowing on the erg or in a boat?).

For 1.) I'm hoping to get about 50k each week so if they have a really,
really slow week I'll definately be closer!
2.) I was pretty sick. It was
a brochial (sp?) thing. My 10 year old daughter ended up with pheunomia from it.
I'm still coughing quite a bit but nothing too serious. My daughter's all

4.) We have good friends moving here from
Australia in December for a teaching exchange. They live in Melbourne and are
coming to very cold Ottawa. We hope hope to go over to your land someday!
My
friend's injury was directly related to the rowing machine. She's a runner and
used the rower as a supplement exercise. Her technique was really bad and she
went at it way too hard before building up the core rowing muscles.
Unfortunately, she has paid the price.

Roses:
Welcome to the Jungle!!I'm looking
forward to the news bites from the GP, can't wait to see how the team members
did (and Carole Mac as she's like an non-executive honorary member
).
I
promised to update everyone with my HM attempt today. Well I'm very pleased to
report that not only did I manage to beat my PB, I took 2 minutes (equivalent to
3 seconds per 500m) off my PB. My new PB for the HM is now
1:26:44.0. My splits (per 2000m)
were:
2:01.1 (24spm)
2:02.6 (25)
2:03.1 (25)
2:03.7
(25)
2:03.8 (26)
2:03.4 (26)
2:04.7 (27)
2:04.2 (27)
2:03.7
(28)
2:05.4 (28)
The penultimate 2000m split time was accelerated as a
friend I hadn't seen in years came over to me to chat and I found myself doing
2:00 (29spm) splits for a couple of 500s.
As well as being pleased with
the new PB, I'm particularly pleased at the way I achieved it. I started off
quicker than planned ('cause it just felt comfortable) and then kept my focus on
maintaining a 2:03 split time (and, yes, I had the monitor on average split time
and must admit it freed my mind from the mathematical calculations so I could
concentrate on my stroke!
).
I've updated Nonathlon and am now in 74th spot (one place below Carla;
until she puts in a 2K row that is!).
I think the amount of rowing I've
been doing has really paid off with this performance. I just need to find the
time to focus on some sprint training to bring my times for the shorter
distances down.

Hey Niall, I'm cheering for you on your HM--to hold

Debra, is
that the same friend who was aiming to beat Mary Perrot's times last year? I
remember thinking that was a bit of a stretch. Wouldn't it be cool if you could
send Martin her rower via your friends when they return to Australia. Of course
Australia is gigantic so it would probably not make much sense. And it makes
rather clumsy luggage, I imagine.
With all this talk about the chances of
my having hit 41:40 at 2:05 on that 10K, I'm glad I've actually got a photo of

OK, so T-shirts - or, what we're really talking about
first, a logo. Any Taffs happen to be graphic designers? =)
The T-shirts
I got done for my gaming clan were silkscreen printed. That means having a
single colour logo that could be cut out of a piece of paper, basically.
This is
more or less what I came up with.
Alternatively, I think Cafepress can do
full colour images, but even so I think that bold block-colour logos work better
than poncey shaded ones.
I've had some ideas, roughly slammed together in
Paintshop. Both black-and-white attempts, and things using red, green and white.
I don't think any of them are really good, but I'll put them up for laughing at
later. =)

Sub 7-min club membership for you now Chippy! Nice one,
well done.
There's quite a queue of us eager for membership ourselves and
it's great to see a team member gaining entry! Fantastic effort and focus.

OK, so T-shirts - or, what we're really
talking about first, a logo. Any Taffs happen to be graphic designers?
=)

You should keep it simple, big welsh
flag, with team name above or below.
Will stand out great

Nice, but i would keep the green and
white background from the flag. Depends on cost of course. My welsh wife would
love them.

Well done Chippy, sub 7 minutes, wish you joy on your
time. I know it was tough, how is you ear?
The tee shirt idea looks great
what color background, Gray? Im in for a few.
I finished my 100,000 meters
just a while ago. quite painful towards the end. I was hoping to do more than
20,558 on Saturday but my lovely wife mentioned that I had a ton of winter
chores to do. Hold on I explained the team needs these points, at which she
explained winterize the outside or no special rubdowns
, Needless
to say after putting away lawn furniture Mowing lawn last time and 24 bags of
leaves plus countless other " honey do things" I got my time in. I had wanted an
easy Sunday so I could watch American Foootball, And see the plays like Carla
mentioned but no go . Three rows for 38750.
