Great job Paul. Add that score to the CTC site yet????

Speedy - Yes just added it. Gave us another few metres over MAD biggrin.gif

Would be nice to stay ahead of them this month and take 3rd. Will be a tough job though, they've got some quality rowers.

We'll all have to just knuckle down and squeeze out a few more metres each biggrin.gif

Just improved my 30' @ 20spm score to 8332m (1.48.0) from 8266m (1.48.9) biggrin.gif

I took on board some of the comments about reducing drag and dropped mine from 130 to 120 and I have to say it certainly made the stroke feel lighter.  Took me 10' of my 20' warm up to get used to it though - it did seem harder to hit splits to begin with, but overall the ploy worked well throughout and I would add my recommendation to giving it a go.

Paced the piece much flatter than last time, went quicker earlier in the piece and reduced the sprint at the end - which really worked well for me.  I'll post my splits in my diary on the UK site if anyone is interested.

This didn't feel like a max effort, so I'd hope to go sub 1.48 before the end of the month.

Just my opinion but I think this session is as much to do with mental strength as physical and if you can get your pacing right, I think you can amaze yourself with what you can do - for example at the outset of the challenge I thought I'd struggle to go sub 1.49 but now reckon I can go sub 1.48.

Spectre - Over to you now a sub 1.50 would be good  biggrin.gif

Great job, Paul! I have to pop over to the CTC site now and see how close we are to 2nd. I'm sure I can do a bit better if I give it a rest till next week.

Last shot was at my usual drag, 117 I think. Maybe I'll mess around with that and see if it's easier with it even lighter.

I did it!  Well, almost.  And we are still in 3rd.  I am not even sure it made our team average go up--I can't remember what it was on before but the number looks the same to me.

7475 meters av. 2:00.4

This is a PB by 120 meters and got me 994 Nonathlon points!
Yeah, that and about $4.50 will get me a cup of coffee, right?

Outstanding stuff Carla. Just when you think you can't do it...well then you go and put in a pb.

Speaking of Nonathlon points. When ya gonna do your lower distances???? If my calculations are correct, just doing any old time for the 500, 1k and 2k would vault you into the top 100. Get to it girl!!! The shorter distances are the easy ones (yeah right!!!).

Dwayne
*

I did a 5K tonight--missed my goal, but it was still a PB by about 15 secs--so I used the 500, 1K and 2K splits from it for Nonathlon. They are poopy times--low 800s but puts me at #28. I still have a marathon to do and that ought to be close to 1000 so it will dump the worst sprint and give me another 100. I'll be right behind you until all the top folks that haven't done their marathon do one.

Right around Crash B time I'll get up the courage to really do the short ones. The best time I ever did at a 2K was on Crash B day and I got so exicited watching everyone's races I ran up and did one without a warmup. It was still nothing to write home about but better than I've done in a few years!

Yes and no. It's hard pushing, but it's so slow that I can really concentrate on good form, especially tightening the abs at the catch. When I try to do all out sprints at faster spms, I tend to lose that and that's when it happens. It's still an excuse though.

Makes me think of the story about some guy who gave his first public speech. It went awfully and he felt terrible. His friend tried to console him as they left the venue. "Don't listen to people who say they were bored or thought you were dumb or wondered why you were allowed to be up on the podium....they are just repeating what everyone else was saying!"

Hey, good for you! Though I have to tell you, the metrenome is somewhat frowned upon. It sure helps me focus, though. And, I can be sure the piece will be an honest 20 spm and not actually really almost 21!

Any stories to tell from Surrey yet?

Well done to Chippy for Silver in the 805m event. Whatsa this about you loaning your AIO?

Niall, How did you feel about your race?

I see the Old Tart just missed out on the podium.

My mind was very much there.

Mrs T has gone away for the weekend and forbidden me from going near the C2 but I might just have to go and touch the handle. I now have a brace fitted so I can bend at the knees. However the knee is still swollen and physio told me not to do too much until the swelling has gone. grrrrr sad.gif

Happy with how my races went. Plan for 3K was race start then settle into 1:55 pace (comfortable pace) and then go from 250m out. Race went perfectly and I felt good throughout. Finished in 11:25.8 (1:54.3).

Plan for the 805m again was to pace it conservatively so race start then 1:45 pace and sprint home 250m to go. Stuck to the plan and ended up with a 1:43.0 avg pace. Had the best start ever and managed a 1:29 split! Also managed to get a split of 1:37 at the end too. Finished in 2:45.8 (1:43.0).

It could have been better if the e-row venue racing software had worked reliably and if Kev Peebles hadn't destroyed one of the ergs.

My 805 was a bit of a bummer, I planned to go 1:42.0. The guy next to me Stuart (not Simon) pulled a 2:44.8 to get gold, I pulled a 2:44.9 (1:42.4) for silver. Stuart was a racing virgin, first ever race was that 805 - I've suggested he joins the UK forums.

The 3K was good, I'd planned all along to go 1:49.0. Kev Peebles sat behind me and coxed me. If you ever want to choose a cox choose KevP. I pulled 1:45.1 for the last 500m because of his coxing (1:47.5, 1:49.1, 1:49.5, 1:49.4, 1:49.7, 1:45.1) ave 1:48.4.

The relay was enormous fun. Thanks to Kimberley for being willing to join in when we found that one member of the team had to be female. (Niall got let off from rowing that last 30 seconds by Kimberley.)

A great day for you, Niall. Where did they get 805 meters--is that 1/2 mile? Good for you for sticking to your plan--nice low splits!! 1:54.3 is great in the 3K, too.

The video was great to see. Is Kimberly going to join TA? We need a good female sprinter for the February CTC 300 meter thing. I'm going to do it but I'd be willing to bet there's certainly someone out there that would be better for the #1 boat in this sprint event.

Kimberley put a great effort in and did us proud. Her 30 second effort was at an average of 1:29 - which is pretty impressive, but when you watch the vid you'll notice she fell off the seat too.

As for joining Taff Attack - we tried but she's committed to another team, doesn't stop us asking thou.

It's not a problem. Stuart hadn't rowed the 3K in the morning. I'll get him next time we're racing together. I'd have loved to do a dead heat. I suggested that he should join the forums and we might be able to sign him up as another Taff LWT if he does.

I had a fun 5K this morning, did a racing start and got a 1:30. Did some really hard pulls every 500m (until 3,500 to go). There were some interesting noises coming off the chain.

It's intervals tomorrow, then another go at the 30'R20 on Wed or Thu (depends how I feel).

Here's a recipe for a train wreck

Take your 10k PB and figure out what pace you have to average to beat it by around 15 seconds. The figure out how to get that average by doing 400 meter "rest" and 100 meter sprints. (Was supposed to be 2:03 and 1:55). Then set out like an idiot at 2:02 and 1:50. Crash and burn at around 5K (well, the log card said 4552, 18:17.)

I was so disgusted that I didn't stick to the plan. But then I took a 5 minute rest and tried to do it again. This time around was really pokey at the end. The 100 meter sprints were good, all well under 1:50, which is fast for me, but as I went on the 400 meter bits got dreadfully slow and by the end I had to actually stop after each sprint for a few seconds and ended up doing some 2:10 ish stuff, so that 5K was a really sad 21:53.

Next time I will stick to the plan properly! I have an ambition to beat my 10k pb this way, I don't know why. I guess so then I can do it over again at a steady pace and see how much nicer that is?

A nice gently slow row tonight LATE since I worked till 9:00 and just finished dinner at 10:00 so it will be a 1:00 am. row. I'll hit the 30 min 20 spm deal again tomorrow.

I've had about 3 or 4 subsequent attempts, but I haven't even been able to match my first attempt, let alone add 50m to it. I don't know why; maybe I need to use the strategy I used the first time - go out fast for the first 5 minutes, then just try to hold on, rather than pacing it evenly.

Great stuff, there, too, Citroen. It's good to have that little bit of daylight between TaffI and MADII; hopefully enough to maintain position until the month's end, but there are still almost 2 weeks to go.

Dougie/Carla - top stuff.

I've just changed my training programme to get some base fitness for next racing season (not been happy with stamina at the end of races this season)- so I'm adopting a 12 week marathon training schedule with a marathon at the end of it. Last 3 nights I've done 60 min rows at 1.52/1.53 pace @ 23spm, which is leaving me pretty tired afterwards - don't know whether I'll be up to a good 30' @ 20spm after this kind of training.

May have another go next week, if it looks like the MAD boys are going to take 3rd from us.

Gosh, did we slip down to 4th & I hadn't noticed? We were in 3rd before I did my last go and still in 3rd afterwards and in 3rd several days ago as well. Guess I'd better keep a sharper eye out!

I don't think I can catch up to you, Doug--I'll have to stay in bow. I'm taking a day off today or else doing some long slow stuff just to make meters go away.

don't know whether I'll be up to a good 30' @ 20spm after this kind of training.

I'm taking receipt of a nice new Model D tomorrow so will be able to train when ever I want to biggrin.gif

If I get the rower in the morning, I'll probably do two sessions tomorrow (12K and 30mins r20)

Way to go Carla!

Fantastic result Carla, I'm hugely impressed!

I took receipt of my very own, brand new Model D today. As a result the whole family are going to join Taff Attack. So far my son, Daniel (aged 9) has done 2314m, my daughter Emma (aged 12) has done 488m and my wife Michelle (age withheld) has racked up just over 1042m.

The Williams Family are officially a Taff Attack Family!!

We're also going to Boston for the CRASH-Bs. My wife has always wanted to go to Boston and I want to compete at the World Championships so we thought we'd kill two birds with one stone!

Welcome to Taff Attack, clan Williams! (Do the Welsh have clans?)

I'm sure Karen would like to go to Boston, too. Shame we've no money. =)

Good to hear about your Model D, and the family joining up. When are they going to add their meters?

What are you shooting for for Boston? Do you think you'll pull your sub-7?

I tried adding my kids yesterday but it didn't work (not sure why). Will try again over the weekend.

Not sure what my target is right now. I did a 1:43.0 for 805m last Saturday (at the Surrey IRC) and felt comfortable at 1:45s through most of it. At the end I got up and walked away so hadn't really pushed myself that hard.

I've got the English Championships in Manchester on the 29th January so that will be a good indicator of how training is going for the 2K.

You're not allowed to define an e-mail address for a minor. Also there's the COPPA stuff that you have to do to for child protection purposes.

Don't forget to send me details so I can add them to the January VTC team.
