Talking of awesome, many congratulations Dwayne on breaking through the 9 Million Metre mark. There's only one word to describe that, it starts with "awe" and sends on "some"!! wink.gif

Bernard,

You've sneaked out in front of me now! Time for the 2005 phase of our friendly competition my friend cool.gif
Niall
BERNARD!! mad.gif
You've been holding out on 50K of rowing ohmy.gif . Just when I thought I was getting close, you've entered a pile of metres and extended your lead. Realistically I'm going to struggle to bridge the gap as my training programme right now is limited to about 40K-60K per week.
I think you may have to join the distance competition with Debra, Chris and Chippy sad.gif

Keep up the metres guys, we're pulling away from MIT but really need to extend the lead and start attacking Team Oarsome before we can feel comfortable.

Hey Niall

I'm following the C2 program for six days a week, AND, the Australian Surfrower plan for improving 2k. This means I will do about 100, 000 metres a week for the next couple of months and then bring it down to around 70,000 for the following couple of months in time for a series of trials (500m to 10k).

I have to admit I am enjoying myself as the C2 program I know quite well and revolves around UT1(70-80% max heart rate) and UT2(60-70% mhr) rows. These are not high intensity, are manageable and technique intensive. They are great for recovery as well. I'm never too tired to do a row the next day and can guage improvement easily and quickly.

Including warm ups I will row for about 1 hour 10 on six days a week using the C2 program. I was doing this religiously before I joined Taff Attack and wasn't so busy at work. Once I buy a concept2 I should be able to do my hour then shower without too much fuss.

The surfrower program is a nightmare and is based on short, sharp and knackering sessions, but there are only three of these short sessions per week. These sessions typically last about 40 minutes, but are murder.

Over the bank holiday weekend I merely did 2x60 mins UT2, a 3x10 mins UT1 and, yesterday a 2x20 mins UT1. Today I did a 30 minute UT1.

The new year has been good to me so far. I'd like to keep it that way!

Bernard
Niall
Great focus Bernard. One training program is clearly not enough for you hence the adoption of two programmes!

What target time are you working towards for 2K? Any other objectives for 2005?
Niall
Daren,

What rowing goals do you have for this year? I've seen a few posts by you recently and feel strongly that you need targets to aim for (aswell as that heater for your garage!).

Let's see them published here so we can support you in achieving them smile.gif . You still got a sub-7:00 2K in you??

Hey Niall

I suppose I'd better share my goals to be reached by the end of April, 2005.

500m - 1'36
1k - 3'22
2k - 6'59.x
5k - 18'40
10k - 38'59

Some of these are more easily attained than others. I may struggle with the 1k and the 5k, but it's probably best not to prejudice the results and see where training takes me. I can always adjust these goals, if necessary.

My goal for BIRC is 6'52".

What about yourself? What are you hoping to achieve in the erging domain this year?

Bernard
Niall
I've got a short list of targets for this year:
  • sub-7:00 2K by the end of March (my birthday)
  • Weigh <75Kgs by BIRC 2005
  • Sub-6:40 2K at BIRC 2005
  • Help Taff Attack get a top 5 position in the University/College Standings

I guess the rest of the distance PBs will fall inline with the 2K performance so I'm guessing something like 37:00 for 10K and 17:30 for 5K (these may be way out though).

So my main concentration is BIRC performance and also to compete in the Grand Prix (i.e. attending most of the GP events not just my local Cardiff one!).
Daren C
Um, um, um... 5 million metres in the calendar year, to lose a stone or two and to crack 6:55 for 2k. The latter is my 'immediate' goal, and the others are ongoing long term goals. I don't know what my current 2k time would be. I'd probably fail to go sub-7 but that would be at least as much the effect of the damp conditions as any loss of fitness.

Oh, yeah, and to do that marathon I need to do...
Niall
First step for you Daren though is to get that heater sorted in the garage. Until that's done, it's going to hinder your progress and motivation.
Warnie
Ok guys, date has been set I am doing the marathon for the Tsunami appeal on the 14th January (Friday). It'll be my first attempt at the distance and hope to complete it within 3 1/2 hours (If I'm still alive!). Will also build up some metres against MIT!

Hi Taffs, hope all is well.

Goood luck with the marathon, Warnie.

New 30min PB today. Was especially pleased as every time I've broken the PB recenctly it's been by a measly few meters but beat it by 96 meters today! Now 8137m. Not sure where that came from but I was very happy afterward!

Hey Daren,

Can you move your erg to the basement? It would still be cool but not so cold you'd be suffering from it. Glad to hear you are back in the saddle--it just seems like it would make sense to move the erg to a more comfortable spot.

Warnie,
Where/how are you collecting for your Tsunami row? Good luck on your first marathon--make sure you post an instant replay for us! I am trying to get up the courage to go for one this season....

NINE MILLION METERS!!!!!!!! Do you happen to have a blue oxe named Babe?

JSamuel--awesome on your 1/2 hour PB. Bet there's more where that came from.

Taffs in general:

Let's keep hammering the meters out and give MIT a shock when they get back from vacation!

Daren C
We don't have a basement/cellar. Most modern homes in the UK don't have cellars. I don't know why, as they'd be a useful space and I doubt they'd add that much to construction costs.

There's always the loft/attic, I suppose.
Warnie
Hi Carla,

thanks for the interest. I will check tonight with the health club (livingwell in Llanishen) to see how we are paying as they are doing collection buckets etc I think it will go to the dec.org ? Can't remember the web address but I will check, it's possible we will pay by cheque with all the cash.

Sent an email round work this morning and had over £200 in pledges in 1 hour so far !!! Delighted with that!

Sounds like a quality row!!

All Taffs,

I want to break into the sub 3 Hr marathon, and I know Martins keen - maybe a few more of us should take part Warnies big one. Even if you dont raise money you'll get 3 hours of thinking time to consider everyone elses suffering around the globe.

I think I am going to try to do a full marathon on the 14th, too. It will be very slow and have some stops in it, but it will help to know you guys are doing it, too. Since the furtherst I've ever rowed was 28K (just couldn't do the full 31K for the Halloween Challenge) and things were hurting in odd ways, it will be a major milestone just to do that many meters in one day, even if I have to do it in 10K chunks with big breaks between.

Hey Carole,

How's it going? How long is the lovely pink cast going to be on there? They never had pink when I had mine done, they only had green and blue sad.gif

BTW, what IS a conservatory in "British"? We yanks call a music school a conservatory. YOu must mean the kind of conservatory that is in the game of Clue, which I never quite understood. Do all houses over there have conservatories, and what do you normally do in one? Just curious!

Keep happy!
Carla
Daren C
A conservatory is like a greenhouse on the back (normally) of a house.

Most houses don't have them when built, but many people add them to the house later on if there isn't one already. Actually, I ordered a conservatory to be built this week. I'm just awaiting planning permission.

They're used for various things... as an interface between the house and the garden, as a dining room, as a kids area, as a second lounge, as... anything really, although I've never seen a conservatory used as a bedroom or a kitchen. Or a bathroom, come to that.

In the UK we don't normally have large areas to the front of the house, my house is a short open plan lawn to the road. The Back garden is where all the entertaining is done.

Funny how names mean different things in different countries
Daren C
My "front garden" is about 3 feet long.

Well done on the PB, Chippy.
seat5
My front lawn is not very big, either. Sun porches don't stick out from the house, really. They stick out the same amount as the regular front porch where the front door is, so the house still has a square footprint. And the windows are regular windows, not to the floor, but they are lined up one after the other so that the wall is all windows.

Maybe I should join an architectural forum!

I have family visiting for 3 days and haven't managed to fit it a row yet. It's so awkward.

Speedy,

A tip to make things easier for you

"Isn't it" in proper 'wen-glish' should be pronounced "in it"

If your a valley boy you would drop the t all together and just say "ini". We also stick 'butt' on the end of everything ('Butties' were a pair of close work mates who worked at the coal face together).

So a typical conversation may read:

Q: "Speedy's one hell of rower, ini butt?"
A: "Aye butt"

Cheers,
Chris

Well, I got a chance to row finally today...my niece, nephew, and brother in law came and tried to have conversation with me while I rowed, so I really didn't think it would be any good. I was trying to do a 10K while they were out, but they came back before I was done...Anyway we actually got in an argument and suddenly I'm yelling and pulling 1:59s. Finally after 8K of what I call "mixed junk" all different speeds and no particular plan, I got a chance to do the final 2K and went all out on it for the first time since the 1983 season. It was slower than my best back then, but still ranked me 17th (or tied for 16th) out of 181 rowers and moved me up to #39 on Nonathlon.

Carla,

It got you doing a 2k for the nonathlon didn't it!?! You'll be in the top 5 in the rankings in no time!
It's funny what you were saying about the splits going down when you were yelling at your relatives. I notice that too when I get mad at my kids for interupting me (thinking it will affect my row) and end up pulling harder because I'm ticked off!
Hubby's going to band practice most of tomorrow so I should be able to sneak a bit of a row in. At this point they're stress rows. Only 6 more weeks to go. Not that I'm counting or anything...

Hey Carole!

You're a great sport, I hope it's fun for you to read the forum and keep excited about rowing so you can jump right back on as soon as your pretty cast is off!

I rowed that 2K mostly at 10 MPS, no straps. Next time I do one I'll try rowing "free" , trade a little rate for pace, and see how it comes. My ancient PB of 7:48.?? was done after I'd been rowing about 2 months and at whatever stroke rate felt good.

'Course now I'm sort of chicken to try another one.....whimper whimper

I don't know why you think I have less weight to drag up and down. I classify as a heavyweight guy right now (only about 2 lbs to go to make a guy's lightweight, though!) and you don't look like you weigh more than 165--170 in your picture.
