Great work,

Your 5k also

Just do a 5k with 1k split - do it at 6k average - and you can put 3

WOW to you too Carla, if I'm not

Thanks for
the congrats Carla, Daren and Niall. Nonathlon points went up by 20 (2 min
improvement on old HM PB) but I've 'hit the wall' in the Rankings - next place
above me a whopping 100 points away. Crikey
Tks
for updating Taff-o-Graffs so quickly Godfried - looks like I've got to do that
HM all over again though as pace graph line still looks out of kilter. All is
revealed by the 'language of Maths' - nowhere to hide ! Unless of course you
make the 'Y Axis' scale really tiny ....

married Emma Plantagenet who was his half 7th cousin once removed. I am

Interesting story with the genealogy program. I did the same
thing going on two years ago now, and found that I was successor to the Earl of
Brockhurst. I did all the legal stuff I needed to do with the Brit government,
and bingo bango. I inherited a title that had been 'sleeping' for some 700
years. Not that it's going to bring me any fame or fortune, but it helps to keep
a certain chap by the name of 'Sir Pirate' (a MAD team member who's a thorn in

Part of the trouble is that I can't
do a fast start from a stopped flywheel. Even after a nice slow 2K warmup (say
10--11 min), when I sit down to do my next piece it takes me about a minute or
so to get the pace where it needs to be. On the shorter pieces, that really
blows the total time. To get the pace down in a few strokes puts way too much
pressure on my lower back. Don't know if it will ever be ok, but I'm not going
to force that and end up not walking, standing, or sitting for a few
months....and then dragging one leg for a few more....wondering if I should
apply for a handicapped parking space sign...no thanks.... been there, done
that, and it's NO FUN!
The splits for the first 1K of the 6K were 2:04.3
and 2:03.7 which would be 2 seconds faster than the official 1K time I've got
down there and the 500 of course ends up slower than my official 500. A 2K would
have been 2:04.3 +2:03.7 + 2:03.1 +2:03.2=8:14.3--certainly nothing to write
home about with my old PB being 7:48.something.
Think I'll just leave the
gap on the graph for the time being.

I read with interest recently a posting on the Training
Forum on the Oarsome Foursome Training DVD. In particular, the reviewer gave a
blow-by-blow account of the rowing technique demonstrated. Armed with this new
found knowledge, I did my 10K session this afternoon and concentrated on keeping
the chain straight (and not undulating like a force 4 swell like I normally do
).
Well, what a difference it made! New SB too which was a nice bonus,
although as you'll see from the splits below, I did have a period in the middle
where I felt I couldn't sustain the rate and went back to old habits. However,
after the 1500m lapse, I realised a SB was on the cards and focused on
maintaining this new technique and worry about the pain afterwards.
I
also have to say to Carla that I'm now a big convert to the Average Pace display
on the monitor. Without this display I don't think I'd have had the confidence
to go for the SB after lapsing.
Anyway, time for the big red font that
indicates a PB or SB (in my case a SB!). New SB for 10K is now
39:27.4. Even though a sub-39mins time would
seem to be a long way off, I certainly think I have the confidence to go for it
after I've got over my cold and post-BIRC.

Is that the Xeno DVD or a
different one? I'm thinking of buying Xeno's. Sounds like whichever one you have
helped you out a lot. About the chain, do you mean you normally row so that it
goes left/right a lot, or up/down?
Keep up the great work. Do you
comminicate with the family about how the challenge is going or do they not know
you are doing it? If you haven't already done it I'll bet it would really "erg

The DVD I referred to was not the Xeno one
but the Oarsome Foursome DVD. You can get some details of its content
here.
Apparently the DVD will be available in the States before Thanksgiving. You can
read about the rowing technique and some info on the DVD itself by clicking
here.
The family know I'm raising money for Sophie and
know about the challenge. I keep them updated at various milestones so they know
I'm still active in the challenge. Although I do indeed have a photo of Sophie
which I've incorporated into the sponsorship form, I don't put it up on the erg.
The picture is very clear in my mind so I can draw on this when I'm feeling
lethargic (which tends to be when I'm in bed and it's cold and dark outside and
the alarm's shouting at me to get down the gym!!). Once i'm sat down on the erg
it's all systems go.

Great work on the SB Niall. Technique is reallyimportant,
I gather. I think mine's reasonable, but I have a tendency to drop the handle on
the recovery, so it traces a line like the perimeter of an orange segment
through my stroke.
Today I've done a few things.
I did 30 minutes
this morning, which was 7682 metres.
This afternoon I did an 8x500m
interval set, with 3 minutes complete rest between them. The first 7 intervals
were done at 1:42.5 and the last one at 1:40.5. That was another
4000m.
This evening I went to the gym so I could do some weights and try
to get a more powerful stroke. While I was there I did an easy 20 minutes
(5132m) and then an easy 2k (7:46), both at around 1:58 pace.
Total for
today 18814m, which is a bit more like what I was doing before I reached my
million and slacked off. =)

Great SB Niall, especially considering
you are suffering from a severe cold. Just shows what the body is capable of and
how much of a mental thing PB's are. Only 10 secs off your PB set when you were
super fit and a sub 39 is indeed just around the corner. One nice thing about a
10K row is that a 1 sec reduction in Ave Pace translates into 20 seconds less
time to do it ! So you only need to reduce splits by about 1 sec (and still have
that 1500m 'rest') and the 39 min barrier is there for the taking.
Hey
Carla, your back problem sounds similiar to mine ? A 'degenerated' lower spine
(mainly just wear-and-tear') coupled with two recent matching hernia ops in the
groin region (lots of mesh in there now) courtesy of 10 years in the vending
business means I have to be very careful of aggrievating that region. Getting
the flywheel moving is a particularly dodgy time so what I tend to do is take a
long slow RELAXED pull to get started (on a lowish DF of 117), then a couple
more in the same vein - making sure I don't tense up. Once the wheel is nicely
underway it's business as usual. I find any time 'lost' in starting this way is
usually made up later on by keeping good form and strong in the middle stages
(except for the 500m - too short !!).
Not sure if this helps at all
Carla, just thouight I would share my thoughts with you.
Chris/Chippy -
not long before the 700m showdown ! Bernie Snr is really piling on the K's too I
see - great. Tks for HM 'praise'
Chris - set
my RowPro boat to 1:53 for the first 5K ! (then 1:59's for the next 10K
!!).

Sooo, I was hoping that if we do it the weekend of the 27/28, first off

the meters would count towards Holiday Challange, and finally as we have been
creeping up on MIT for so long that this push should put us into fourth place

Mike, I have the dangerous habit of thinking as well, and just wondered
if we should maybe have a half marathon day for the team, maybe two in a week.
It gives people enough time to recover, do competition training, sleep, play

It's not as if TA members don't do loads of metres in a week

Two weeks ago I took my 2K time from 7:11.9 (1:48.0) to
7:04.6 (1:46.1). Today I shaved a bit more off it.
The aim was to try
setting out a race plan for BIRC. Play for today was to do 1500m at 1:46 and
then let loose the dogs in the last 500m, hoping I could nail 1:43.
The
game didn't pan out as intended. I wasn't really very good at judging the 1:46
pace, so the first 1k was done more like 1:45. At about 1000m I started to pay
for it, but hung on grimly for another 300m. At around 1300m I really started
feeling it, and my pace slowed significantly to 1:47.5 and then 1:49. After that
slight breather I could see the end in sight with just another 400m to go. I
fought for 100m at 1:47 and then poured everything out; 1:46 for 300-200, 1:44.5
for 200-100 and then 1:42 for the final 100m.
End result, a new PB of
7:02.8 (1:45.7). Still a bit to do if I'm going to breach 7 minutes in 2
weeks' time. I take some solace from the fact that I overdid my own game plan at
the start, and also that I'm not fully rested. I'm going to try the same race
plan again at the weekend I think, and hopefully stick to the 1:46's I wanted to
get. If I can do that and still do the final 300m like I did today, it's going
to be very close.

Daren,
Great job man!!
If I
were you, I wouldn't worry to much about the 7 minute barrier. The main reason
being that you said you weren't fully rested. That right there can account for
up to a second. The second thing is that you were doing this at your leisure, on
your own. Wait until you get into a race setting. You'll try and stick with your
game plan, but you won't.
Most people end up going just a wee bit
faster. Why? The crowds, the venue setting, etc. The year I was there, a chap
set a new pb by more than 12 seconds!!!!
My prediction for you (baring
anything catastrophic) will be a sub 7 time. Give 'em 'ell mate!!

Daren,
Great work on the 2K time mate! You must

I

very uninspiring time), I noted my splits and then did the calculations for the
6K distance. I already knew it was a new PB as I'd had the display on Average
Pace and had noted it was showing 1:58.0. Once the calculations were done, I was
pleased to see a new PB of (cue large red numbers)
23:35.5 from a previous PB of 23:44.
I
know I can improve on this time as my 6K times have always been part of a 10K
row so I've never done just the 6K. Some day I'll have to make the effort and do
it (either once Bernard's too far ahead of me to catch or I'm comfortably in
front of him
).
(Still haven't done any 2K training pieces
)

Gutted about not able to be with you for the homicide, hope your
guys got some overtime out of it!!
It' a tactic I have giving away all
my chocolate samples away, so you all have to row harder to burn the calories
away!
Watch this space Graham - Lots of Meters coming my
way...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

see you all for my big match in Cardiff on Thursday night.

Good luck for the big match Ricky -
hope that 16K row doesn't play havoc with the 'glutes' !
Nice PB's Daren,
Niall. Like Daren's chances of breaking 7 at BIRC - looks as good a bet as Phar
Lap in his heyday - bookies refusing to take bets
Why
don't we do a marathon on the appointed Taff Million weekend ? Good incentive to
get it done for Nonathlon/personal achievement etc !

Hats off to Ray who's clearly been spending every spare
moment on the erg. I'm sure it was only a few days ago I saw his total metres on
2000 and I've just had a look now and it's jumped to 5,500!
Great effort and focus Ray, way to go and keep it up mate, every metre
counts!
Martin,
I'm really not sure about the marathon piece. Personally
I'd rather do two or maybe even three pieces in a day that amount to the
marathon distance but I know my body or the time commitment (in one stretch)
wouldn't be able to do the marathon. Sorry to put a downer on it as I'm normally
Mr Positive but my own personal circumstances and ability would prefer an
overall distance target (30-40K) which I could do in multiple sessions if
necessary.
Graham,
How did the squash go??

Hi
I did my routine, setting a new 1k pb on
the last repeat and 500 metre best.
The
1k - 3'31 and the 500 m was 1'34.4. So that's another 11.5k - what with the
warm-up, cool down and interval paddles.
My
nose is now streaming with cold and my head hurts. The hot flushes have started
and so I'm going to just sit here at work and drink my lemsip and feel sorry for
myself. I may even do some work.
No
erging for the next couple of days, so go on, Niall, take advantage of a sick
man.
Martin, I have to side with Niall and say that I couldn't row a marathon
in one sitting. A half-marathon, yes, maybe followed by one the following day,
but I really couldn't eat a whole one.

Hey, congratulations on the 1k
and 500m PBs,
especially a) at the end of a session and
with a head
full of cold. Great stuff. =)

I'm certainly not the type to take
advantage of a sick man like yourself (that's a reference to your illness and
not your persistant ability to put in loads of metres day-in
day-out!).
I'm going to use this opportunity to finally get round to some
2K training during my afternoon rowing sessions.
I'm
looking forward to resuming the battle with you once you've shrugged off your
man-flu.
Great job on the PBs too Bernard, especially in your current
condition. Who knows how much of an improvement you could get once you're
fighting fit!

I'm not the only one with that
persistent ability to row loads of metres every day"! You don't do so badly
yourself!
At least constructive, positive things come out of my
illness.

Good luck with the 2K training. I'm
going home, I feel dreadful. Might do a quick 5k before I go - just joking. I
couldn't pull a face let alone an ergo.
Ray, your a superstar. Keep it
going mate.
Happy erging

Hey Dwayne
I won't train like that again
while I'm ill, I feel really bad. Hopefully, I'll be rid of those horrible
little germs after a good night's sleep, so I can resume preparation for BIRC
and resume my titanic struggle with Niall. I wonder if we can pass a million
before the end of the year?
Did you get the email I sent you about your training programme? I sent
it a couple of days ago.

30 minutes this morning. 7738m, avg pace 1:56.3, 28-33
SPM, 6.6-8.6 SPI, 130-176 BPM
5k this evening, 18:42.2, avg pace 1:52.2,
28-33 SPM, 7.2-9.3 SPM, 150-187 BPM.
The 5k actually shaved 2.6 seconds
off my previous PB of 18:44.8, so I'm quite pleased with that coming on the top
of the 30 minutes earlier. Got me 2 more nonathlon points, too. =) Oddly,
although my heart rate was into the 180+ range for quite some time, I didn't
feel this was as taxing as the 2K, so maybe I do feel the muscular fatique more
than I realise (I've always put it down to breathing and CV fatigue more
before).

Good luck in the HM James - having recently
done one after a loooooong layoff (20 years !) I know how that distance
can bite you. Going for any particular time ? I was aiming for a sub 2
hrs, did 2:01 (now THAT was gutting Chris !!!)

Thanks! I wasn't going for a
particular time as I had no idea what I'd be able to do as all my training was
done on a cross trainer. Went ok, although my legs only stoped aching enough to
do some rowing today! I did 1:41.50 in the end. My Will have to try rowing one
next. Eek!
I'd be up for trying for 1,000,000 in a weekend or something.
How much would we each have to row?

Well, Taff Attack has 25 members. So,
in theory, 40km each would do it. Of course, not everyone can manage that in a
day. Over a weekend we might be able to get closer. For example, I could do at
least 30km each on two days, making 60km for the weekend.
Depends how
many take part and how fit we all are. =)
Well done on the half marathon.
I still can't run at all. Makes me knackered after about 2 minutes. =)

Trained with Chippy tonight for some reason his decided
he was up for doing a load of Sprints 150m 10x 1.30 min rest. The mad foul then
decides he wanted to blast the final interval rowing at
1.21 pace. He
looked across at me with an angry face and teeth showing. He was like a mad
bull!!!!
A big
thanks to Chippy, Graham, Sue, Richard for supporting me last night in my match.
I'm feeling a little tiered today as you can imagine.
Well done everyone
on your PB's that great news keep it up. Unfortunitly I won't be doing much
rowing this weekend as I'm celebrating my birthday (23rd) won't be in any fit
state for exercising.
Take care everyone keep fit!!!!
