I'm thinkin' another million meter weekend.
The US
has a pretty major holiday this weekend (Thanksgiving). So this weekend is
probably a scatch on this side of the pond. How 'bout next weekend??? That would
probably put us past MIT for sure, and get us a bit closer to our (my) new
nemisis U of NM. All those in favor say 'Aye'.

Next weekend sees the Cardiff Grand Prix event on Sunday
5th. I'll be travelling on Friday 3rd, and also Saturday 4th as it's my office
Christmas party on Friday and that's 300 miles away. So, aye, but I won't be
able to do much, and I expect a few UK Taffs will be racing in Cardiff, too, so
they won't want a big weekend.

I've signed up for the Cardiff Grand Prix too so I'm not
going to be much use. Sorry not to be much of a team player just recently. I'm
more than happy to put in the metres during the week but weekend stuff is going
to be out for a couple of weeks
.
Sorry guys!
Love the idea about the awards by the way. I'm
certainly with Daren on the monetary reward aspect, just having my name on a
roll of homour (like that's gonna happen!) would be reward enough for me.

OK! Here's an idea:
There could be 3 prizes, one
for meters rowed during the Holiday Challenge time (this would mean that just
because someone has rowed 8 million meters this season, they don't have an
advantage, really, since we all start at 0 meters on 11/25--well, except the
incredible fitness advantage and we won't think about that right now) another
for the person who increased their daily average meters the most, and another
for the person who improved their power per stroke--maybe the 4 min test.
What would we use for a baseline for the most improved daily meters--I
don't think we should use the average per season, because that would give a
decided advantage to people who didn't start rowing regularly at the beginning
of the season (like me). It should maybe be the average of the month of October
or Nov 1--25? Baseline for the power test would be doing a 4 min piece, starting
of course with a stopped flywheel, at the beginning of the month. The total
meters would just be total meters, of course.
The prize could be
being allowed to use a special Taff attack avatar that has the dragon wearing a
shirt saying which category was won, I don't know, say, "High Meters Taff",
"Improved Power Taff" and "Improved Distance Taff"
No, those aren't cool
enough, someone else will think of what to put on the shirts. Or below the
dragon's erg.... The avatar should have a fancy frame around it that makes it
stand out as an award thing and maybe have a blue ribbon on the
corner.
You could use that avatar until the next time we do a team
challenge. It would be really fun, I think, to try to earn them. I'm sure we'd
come up with other ones to earn as the year went on.
Then if someone
felt like it they could challenge the current holder on a personal basis, and if
the challenge was accepted, we could be cheering our teammates on and see who
prevailed.
What do you think?

Nov 24 2004, 05:01 PM
Great ideas Carla. I loved the idea of a special avatar,
it's like an online merit badge scheme. I agree that the avatar should have a
fancy border (gold?) and the achievement should be clearly stated.
Is it
worth considering using the Nonathlon points system to determine
improvements/ability as this system is a great equaliser. In terms of awards
names how about:
PB Smasher - for most improved PB time (as a percentage
of old time)
SB Smasher - for most improved Season's Best time (as a
percentage of old time)
Erg Monkey - for largest increase in baseline weekly
total
Can't think of any other award names right now so I'll do a 10K row
this afternoon and see what I come up with.
Godfried
Nov 24 2004, 09:30 PM
#### -
#### No erging for a little over 250 hours.
It looks like I needed to do something other than rowing to fill that time.
Guess what. So I gained 3 kg ( 7 lbs ).
#### And today's 7k ( 6 times 5 mins ) felt
like the 42k last month.
#### So
I know I am really not ready for EIRC. Will try to be good the next weeks ,
see what I
can do to get back in shape.

Now that BIRC is a thing of the past I'm steadily getting back into

Mike, my
grandchildren spend some time erging whenever they come to visit since I got my
C2. Isn't it interesting how easy it seems for children to do things naturally?
When you go to a gym you see adults doing all kinds of weird things on rowing
ergometers. In contrast, with very little instruction it seems children can do
it rather well.

I reckon our

Maybe we should look for a team sponsor who will pay for
the race kits in return for having their logo on the strip too, like MAD Team.

Thanks. 31/32 SPM just seems to be my
natural rate. Its the rate I feel most comfortable at. Slower rates seem
awkward, but that might just be because I have to work harder to keep the same
pace. At 31/32 I pretty much just bounce off my heels in the catch. No, it's not
a great technique. =)
You're right, I should work on the power in my
strokes. I need to give my 5k a seeing to as well, according to these
figures:
CODE |
Distance Time Position
Pace --------------------------------------- 500M
1:33.0 123/319 39% 1:33.0 1000M
3:19.1 80/292 27% 1:39.6 2000M

60:00.0 82/247 33% 1:59.1 21097M
1:27:32.5 72/149 48%

which isn't big, and isn't clever. =)
Niall
Nov 28 2004, 07:52 PM
Well, I'm ecstatic! I managed to cream both my previous
60-minute PB and the 15,000m barrier.
Tactics for the 60 minutes ('cause
I know Martin loves this stuff!) was to do the first have at 1:59 pace and the
second half at 2:00 pace. As it was I went off at 1:58 and it felt comfortable
so I decided to change my tactics to 15-minute paces of 1:58, 1:59, 2:00 and
2:01 which would still get me through the 15,000m mark.
Splits
(3-minutes) ended up as follows:
1:58.2 (26spm)
1:58.1 (25)
1:57.9
(25)
1:57.8 (26)
1:58.4 (26)
1:58.9 (26)
1:58.8 (26)
1:58.7
(27)
1:59.1 (27)
1:59.5 (27)
1:59.6 (27)
1:59.9 (27)
1:59.8
(27)
1:59.6 (27)
1:59.8 (27)
1:59.9 (27)
2:00.0 (27)
1:59.9
(27)
1:59.7 (27)
1:53.6 (30) - thought I'd pick up the pace in the last 3
minutes!
Final distance of
15,146m that's an improvement of
475m.
So i'm really pleased to have got through that 15,000m threshold and to have
smashed through it!
As well as the end result what I'm really pleased
with was the controlled nature of the row. As you can see the stroke rate was
consistent and I felt in control throughout.
Did I mention I was pleased!

Just updated Nonathlon and the new 60-minute PB has ended
up as my highest score (846 to 874) and given me an extra 18 points to my
total.
Question for Daren, when you did your 60-minute PB, what was your
2K best at that time? Reason I ask is that it might give me an indication of
what I might be capable of right now as my 60-minute time is similar to yours
(although it's probably time you updated your 60-mins PB by now!).

I see some great stuff happened on our
team since while I was away-- great job on the hour PB, Niall, and Daren on your
6K!
I'm back from Thanksgiving Holiday and feel great, so ready to hit
the Holiday Challenge. Figuring on taking the days before each holiday concert
and Christmas Eve off from rowing, I've got 24 days at 8334 meters each. That
will be more consistant rowing than I've usually done. I'm not even sure if it's
more total meters in a month than I've done before, though. But I really want to
aim for that consistancy and no excuses, these are the days I'm rowing, no
matter what, sort of thing. Maybe I'll even end up with some PBs along the
way.
It's great to be back!

- my 2km pace!

Tore Foss's marathon record has fallen. I
did a 2:27:48.4 yesterday. |
Fantastic time Speedy, well
done.
One question though. To validate the time, did you have in
attendance:
- Two independent time marshalls
- One representative from the Indoor Rowing Governing Body
- An atomic clock source
- A degree in astro-nuclear time-keeping
I just want to make sure
after the fiasco of formalising your fantastic 2K WR, that we didn't have a
repeat this time round!
It's amazing that even with the times you're
posting, you're
still able to post PBs. It must be a great feeling that
every time you have a PB it's also a World Record!
