Belated congrats on EIRC 7:14 - no
story to tell ? See from your cryptic post above and the Taff Team list that you
are now next door to Mike in NY. A work-related permanent move ?
Welcome

Hi Martin,
The Million Metre
Challenge is very close to completion. I've got 7,700m to go. Got a phone call
last week from the Communications Manager in work who asked if I'd be interested
in completing the challenge live on TV
. Being the
shy, retiring type I said I'd be up for it so I've had to go on a "Go Slow" and
just keep the metres ticking down as I'm waiting for confirmation of the date.
I've asked if it can be before Christmas as I don't want to drag it out too long
(it's already very frustrating limiting my sessions to 7-8K; today will be
5K).
Through work, they've also arranged some a news item in the local
paper (the South Wales Echo) for which I had my photo taken last week for the
story (see below):
At
my gym they've just replaced all the Model Cs with Model Ds so I'm getting used
to the new features (quite like the power curve display at the moment!). Have
really struggled this week to do any decent sessions so think I must be coming
down with something (I'm the only one in my family who hasn't been hit by a bug
that's doing the rounds); wouldn't think for a second it could be anything to do
with my ability
.
Last but certainly not least, a big welcome to yet another Redmond
family member (how big is Chippy's family
?). As
Martin quite rightly says, if Bernard is anything like Chippy in the
competitiveness department, I see interesting times ahead.

Great photo Niall - looks like plenty of power in that
frame of yours ready to be unleashed on that poor erg.
Hope you are right
with the pre Christmas TV timetable else you may well be doing 1K sessions at
super slo-mo pace just to fill in the time
Carole Mac's
charity website worked a treat - definately the way to go if Sophie's qualifies
and it could be worked into the script ?
Keep healthy Mr Megastar, a
fluey appearance is not a good look on TV

Welcome aboard, Bernard!
I've been pretty quiet
lately. Fankly, I'm going through on of those "can't be arsed" phases, and my
logbook reflects that; since my half marathon PB on the 10th, I've only logged 6
sessions, doing no rows on the 11th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 17th, 18th or 20th.
=/
Still, the 11k on Tuesday and 10k yesterday took me past the 200km for
the Holiday Challenge. Part of the problem is that the garage is just so cold
and damp; a very unappealing place to go, particularly as the effect of the damp
air on my lungs/chest makes it that much more difficult to exercise.
Must
try harder... =)

I have the same problem Daren, not
damp, but cold garage. It's going to be cold until March at least, so you need
to get it sorted. Get a heater and get organised, switch it on to warm up the
garage before rowing. I have to have mine on a timer so I can row on returning
home from work.
I get problems if the garage gets too cold, chest just
closes up, performance drops.
You can't slob around until March,
Manchester GP isn't far off, Get off your arse and get back on top of it, you
used to be rowing 3 times a day, maybe you need a new goal.
Daren C
Dec 23 2004, 02:34 PM
Aye, I know. I think a new goal is something I need.
Another part of the problem is that I've rediscovered gaming (Quake 3 and
Counter-Strike:Source), and sitting in a warm room at my PC seems better than
freezing my nuts off in the garage.
As you say, Manchester GP is less
than two months away though. I haven't done anything today, yet, so I'll go out
there this afternoon and get something done. I won't get much chance at all
tomorrow (wedding anniversary so we're going out in the evening, and we're
taking the kids to see Toy Story on Ice in Manchester during the day), then
Christmas Day (family to visit) or Boxing Day (family visiting) will both
probably be limited time. I would think that'll be the same for most, though!
Niall
Dec 23 2004, 02:55 PM
Daren,
How about a 2K PB at Manchester? Do you
think a sub 6:55 is realistic?
Judging by previous comments you've made
about what motivates you and your short attention span, it certainly sounds like
you need a new challenge.
Manchester GP seems like a very suitable
timescale to work to.
So you know what to do. As Steve says, get a heater
in the garage and then there's no excuses.
You're Mr PB, you've got a
reputation to maintain
and colleagues/friends to support and motivate you.
Daren C
Dec 23 2004, 03:10 PM
6:55 in 7 weeks? Easy!* I'm not sure how far away
I am as I haven't tried a 2k since BIRC. I could have a go this afternoon, but I
think the damp weather will preclude me from really performing at my best
anyway. It's not going to get any warmer before Feb 13th though. =) I'll nip to
Argos and get a heater of some sort once the Xmas rush is over. I had to go to
ASDA today to get some dog food, and it was heaving.

like the way the phlem congeles in the back of my throat every morning, and the

35 centigrade yesterday, garage was more like 45 C ! Gym
conditions perfect - V'ess rowed a gutsy 7:41 for the Gym 2K challenge when told

Just done 15K, only 100K to go. Luckily we're 12 hours
ahead of the Concept2 timepiece so I've got half a day up my sleeve
Embedded in that 15K was a nice little pressie from Santa - a 6:55.7 2K
to put me ahead of the gym instructor boyos (6:56.9 their best shot). Or so I
thought - on closer inspection of the challenge board lurked a 6:52
Somebody must
have emerged from the deep recesses of the weights section and banged it out
yesterday. Oh well, back to the strategy drawing board to find another 4 secs.
As if its not enough to have Chris elbowing past on a regular basis .....
Enjoy your Christmas pud when seeing to that 15K Carla

Hey gang!
Merry Christmas!
I'm glad my erg
is not in the garage....brrrrr
Martin, you will catch up and pass me
while I take my Christmas break, I'm sure! But you don't need me to motivate you
anymore--not with the ladies who frequent your gym, from the sound of it!
Just finished the 200M challenge, I feel really great about it! I am
looking forward to being able to do some better quality rowing after
Christmas... I think I need more recovery time than this Challenge allowed to
row any PBs. I'm so tired!!!!!
Some of my "mixed junk" rows make me think
I have some good improvements to look forward to. To break up the monotony I did
a lot of 12K rows with 100m sprints every 500m; later changed that to 200m
sprints every 1K. I'm able to get the split down much faster than I used to, and
can do the sprints at 10MPS and 1:50. So the 10mps training seems to be finally
bearing some fruit. When I speed up the rate to sprint, it feels natural and
right to still pull 10 MPS. I'll continue with the 200m sprints for a while,
then up it to 300, 400, until I feel Ok about doing 500m intervals. Then I'll
face the dreaded 2K......
Have a wonderful holiday, everyone!!! I
hope Santa puts everything you want under the tree!
